Another congrats to you, Joey. We’ve got the Kona2 + Kbox + iO setup here and it’s going great too. Heck, we even have a couple of AJA converters in the mix for good measure! I really have to say that AJA really has their game on. I couldn’t be happier with this set up. It’s really something else.

FWIW: OSX 10.3.8 is the most stable, rock solid version right now. There’s a thread below that discusses 10.3.8 vs. 10.3.9, but it mostly has do do with Xraid stuff if that matters to you. Otherwise, you should be okay as others like Jerry are.

    Happy editing!!!

[Ben Ruffell] “We also put in a Panasonic 50″ Plasma HD client monitor – for the wow factor.”

Yes, definitely for the wow factor! Because these things sure do look like crrrrrrap! I simply see it as a marketing tool… and it **works**. I wont be ditching my client-side plasma any time soon! 😉

My main edit suite in my facility is basically everything that I wanted to implement…

    https://www.creativecow.net/articles/solorio_marco/tbc-review/index.html

This suite is based around AJA Kona2 + Kbox and AJA iO 2R version. Full digital and analog implementation from SD to HD. The latest addition: FinalTouch HD + JLCooper MCS3000/Spectrum control surface. Oooooo baby!!!

Although we have a much larger ProTools setup in the audio control room for actual recording/mixing/scoring purposes, we do have a smaller ProTools Mbox setup in the main edit suite. We don’t necessarily use it in FCP, but rather use it on its own with the PT software for quick audio fixes/mixes or VO stuff. All audio goes to the Tascam DM-24 digital mixer as pictured. Anything more serious goes to the audio control room which has many more audio toys to play with.

  • [walter biscardi] “Bob, have you compared that Dell to the Sony MFM-HT75W? It has DVI, RGB, Component, Composite, and S-Video inputs. 720p and 1080i supported.”

But its native resolution only goes up to 720p. Any 1080 material will get down-rezed. I think if you’re going into an LCD route, the Dell 2405FPW is a great way to do it.

I hope Gary sees this thread. He did some testing on the K2 and the Teranex in terms of SD to HD upconvert and found it to be incredibly close. Within a very small percentage of being identical… like around 3 to 4% (!!!)

Yo Gary, where are ya bro!

Your Flame is RGB, so if you capture HD to it and bring it over to FCP, you’ll lose a generation of color space. You’ll undoubtedly have to transcode it from Flame’s codec to an FCP-compliant codec (most likely Apple’s codec since you don’t have HD hardware). Stick with 10-bit so as to lessen the transcoding loss from Flame RGB to FCP Y’CbCr. I’m not certain which machine will be doing the transcoding though. Hmmmm.

You can edit in HD without hardware, but you’ll be working off the canvas window, which is a fraction of the HD size and far from the color accuracy as outputting to an HD CRT with hardware.

Dude, just convince them to return that MPEG-2 card and get a Kona2. It’s not that much money, especially compared to the alternative *loss* you’ll get in the long run by NOT buying it. Seems like poor business sense on their part, but just an opinion.

Sorry man, sounds like you’re in a big mess. =(

Well yes, in the case of long distances, SDI is a wise choice. But even so, at the point of monitor-contact, either the Sony card or an AJA converter will do the same thing in the end.

[Bob Zelin] “If you boys would simply use the AJA HDP (or Decklink HD Link) and a Sony
SDM-P234b for $1999, you will get a 23″ full 1920×1200 resolution, and not have to worry about the 800 line limitation”

Not a chance. LCD blacks look horrible IMO. Not to mention pixel inconstancies. Until LED officially comes to market, I’m sticking with CRT for the NTSC/PAL monitor. The PVM is doing great as is.

[Bob Zelin] “aside from the fact that you can’t even get the PVM-20L5/1 anymore.”

They’re out there. Although I may get another one before they really are all gone. Truly a great monitor. Shame on Sony.

[Bob Zelin] “And just for the record, I would take an “old” PVM-20L5/1 ANYDAY over the “new” Sony Luma LDM series.”

Absolutely. Those Luma displays are pure junk. It was very amusing seeing the Sony reps at NAB run around the floor dodging PVM questions. Again, shame on Sony.
