I don’t know about you all, but i wouldn’t do sub0-titles in my color pass. Either way when you export the finished QT/DPX/whatever, it’s baked in. How will you have a textless master then?

And i can’t think of one time, even on features, where every card was perfect all the way through.

IMHO, i would do the subtitles in Smoke/FCP/Premiere, as just changing a single period to 2 periods (just an examaple), will not require you to re-render the entire shot. hell, you may not need to render anything, depending on your system.

And if you’re setup up with multiple workstations, it makes even more sense, as you won’t need to book more time on the Davinci to finish your online Master.

Just a shot in the dark, but, did you add/install the Quadro 4000 after you installed Davinci? i got weird wonky errors when i tried to swap out a 7800 for a 4500 without reinstalling.. Davinci just about spit out the cards…

April 18, 2007 at 8:31 pm in reply to: Grinner vs. Avid

    Ted,

I’d have to agree with Bob, in that, Yes, avid has a great Product, or maybe a few. But the simple fact is, their development has really gone in a direction that doesn’t concern/affect most post-production editors(like what they built the biz off of). Avid is more concerned about server side things and TV broadcast stations than anything. and it shows.

The problem is not that people like Bob and Grinner dislike the MC or other avid products, it’s just that the development of new tools, and faster ways to do things, has come to a snails crawl. While other products like FCP or Premiere or Smoke continue to advance and push the envelope to what we as editors can do. Just be glad you’re not a DS user. Now there’s one that has been swept under the rug.

And are Grinner’s comments really that bad? when’s the last time you were on the L2?

And what ever happened to Elastic Reality.. boy that was a great app…

Use autoduck to export an OMF file from FCP.

you can do one of the following.
    1. Import OMF into DS directly. This works well. not too much else to say about that.

    2. Import OMF into MC. Export sequence from MC as an AFE file. import into DS.

ther’s not alot of difference betweent he 2 by the time you do this. The OMF–>MC–>DS route is thought to clear up an issues in the interchange..

Autoduck is your friend. Wes is great for support.

we have a MacAlley mouse attached, and that was my first thought, load the Mouse Driver.

As soon as i get done capturing this ALE, I’ll give the Cntrl-Shift Click a try. i hope it works. that would be really nice.

    thanks all,

can you open the quicktime in Quicktime Player Pro. then there’s your quicktime. do a Save as, and make the movie self contained.

i’ve tried this with only a few test dpx files. the file on your desktipp is what we used to have called “disk Images”. still in use today, but not with that particular icon.

When you set up you DPX Link Quicktime, where are you saving it to? after you drag your dpx files onto your disk image, open you quicktime that you just set up, and it should contain all the frames equal to what you dagged to the disk image.

Now, use FCP or AE, or Quicktime pro, load the quicktime movie, and do what you need to do.

    it’s pretty nice.

    good luck, marc

do your edit in 24p, since that is whats called “the universal format”. . you can then import that into compressor or DVD studio pro and make your DVD from that.

October 30, 2006 at 6:37 pm in reply to: EDL help !!

regardless of what you’re trying to do, (ei. frame rate/size) you should be able to export your seq in many formats of edl & copy them to a drive for online, but also, find out what type of smoke you’re going to online on, and see if it will accept an FCP XML file. as the newer version of smoke do. (for smoke, it may also be a plugin that you can download from autodesk)

    good luck,
    Marc
