Freelance is a big step. When deciding to freelance, you have to ask yourself. Are there many people(clients prehaps) you work with ask if your available to do freelance work, outside the company.

I used to be an inhouse editor , for an events company several years ago. When left the company all I had is my knowledge with photoshop and Final cut 5. I took a gamble going freelance, and sadly I got only two projects for my 1 and half year being freelance. I think the reason is most companies are affraid to gamble with new editors, especially with low profile and limited skill sets.

Lucky I was offered to do an inhouse position in a small prod company, and there I build up my skill set and network. After leaving the company, I was able to work fairly in freelance. Since I also built my network, people who I work with keep calling in.

There are still times that I get stuck with no work for a few weeks even months, but now it not as difficult as it was before.

One thing you have to understand is that your not the only freelance in the industry, there are many us, too many to compete with. You have to show the companies that you have something that seperates you from the rest.

Most freelance are also able to get enough work because that have based companies. Companies that would call them whenever a project comes.

So there build up your skill sets, and your network. Let the industry know that your worth the money they are paying you.

I just finish my first discussion with the client, and I find that communication is a factor. Email proves to be really difficult when bouncing off comments and ideas to one another, sometime the message couldn’t get throuhj. It will really prove a challenge.

In regards with pay, I been inquiring to many banks, asking what will be the best solution for payments like this, and I haven’t even given an estimate to my client on how much it will cost him. Mainly I have no idea on what are the standard rates there in the states. I might scare him, if I cost too high, then again I might regret it if I cost too low.

The format is a DVCPRO HD 720p60, with a 23.98 frame rates per second, a data rate of 5.8/sec, a pixel aspect of HD 960×720. Audio are a 4 channel Mono with an audio rate of 48.0 Khz with a format of 16-bit Integer.

I have to down-size this material to an NTSC 4×3 Format so I used.(The reason that our device could work with HD materials, the broadcast Output is a 4×3 material).

Here is my sequence setting in Final Cut pro.

    Frame Size 720×480
    Aspect Ration: NTSC DV 3:2
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC-CCIR 601/ DV (720×480)
    Anamorphic 16:9: Unchecked
    Editing Timebase:23.98

    Quicktime Video Settings
    Compressor Uncompress 10-Bit
    Quality 100%

    Audio Settings
    Rate:48 KHz
    Depth: 16-bit
    Cofig: Channel Grouped

    Video Processing
Render 10-bit material in High Precusuion YUV

In the Video Playback I used AJAKona 525i29.97 10-bit Uncompress

Again Thank you for the help, I very much appreciate it.

I use a DVCPRO HD 1080ip30 in my timeline for the edit and exported the mats in a 1080i Umcompress format. but I export it in several different formats in HDV and DVCPRO HD, use only the 1080i preset. they told the quality didn’t suffer at all.
