these are the books that I tried when I was starting to learn after effects. these are the so-called the Bible of motion graphics. They are easy to learn and will give you a good foundation in this field.

it would depend on what kind of look you want for the fire. generally, you may want to use Fractal noise (Effects > Noise&Grain > Fractal noise) in creating fire, smoke and other organic partcles. For step by step instructions, go to tutorial link of this site and search using keywords like fire, smoke and the like.

If you are using After Effects 7.0 …try the preset animation palete. Go to Animation Presets > Synthetics > Globe rays. It looks like a disco ball and you can see the different effects used.
