I had a machine built by https://www.ibuypower.com out of LA. They are a “gaming” company, but that’s exactly the kind of machine I wanted for a video workstation. Large case, lots of cooling and a big power supply. Everything is an option, so you get what you want, assembled and working. I called first to talk with one of the tech guys, and told him what I was doing, not gaming, and sent him the specs for Vegas Pro via e-mail. They put together a decent system for me and it’s working fine.

Clear plastic bag, taped around the lens shade, use a clear filter for protecting the lens, if you use an eyepice tape it around the eye cup as well. You can operate with your hand under the bag from the bottom or just grab the camera through the plastic. Beer on the camera, ick. Careful with your mic’s as well, drunks generally grab at them. Simple enough, or get a dedicated rain cover.

Thanks’ for the reply, I was hoping there was something I missed! I’m now using a second instance of VP11 to act as a “trimmer” and cutting and pasting, I’m able to get multi synched tracks this way.

Tascam says it can, but I only use it as a recorder. It can “pass through” all six inputs, or mix down to a stereo pair, you can feed that to a camera, but I would only want to use it a scratch track. I prefer to mix in post, not on location. If you need to “ride levels” this recorder only has one rotary pot, you change channels by pushing a button and then rotating the pot. A little weird, but I got used to it quickly, fine for my work, but if you wanted to ride all the levels it would be a problem. Still I think it’s far superior to the Zoom products for location sound recording.

I have been using a H4, older model, and had the same issues. Bought a Tascam DR-680 and have not looked back, for the same price as a decent mixer, I get a 6 track recorder, clean pre-amps, and their is a guy who upgrades the electronics if you want to squeeze the last bit of quality out of the device.

I bought two of his “modded” mics, they are amazing. Small diaphragm condensers, matched stereo pair, fabulous as boom mics or on a stand.
The output of the Tascam is fine for me, but the headphone pre-amp is noisy, just remember that when you are listening as the mic pre-amps are quiet.M

VP11; win7/64 Sorry for the lack of data.
I guess I’m looking for a workflow as John R previously suggested using nested projects, that works great, but I”m having issues with VP11 not bringing more than two tracks of audio through the trimmer. I am now opening 2 instances of VP11 and using one as an “edit” and the other as a “trim bin” if I copy and paste from one time line to the next I am able to bring all audio tracks (3 mono) with the pix in synch, and the nasty scratch track does not pop up.
Naturally I’m trying to avoid rendering all my clips with synched audio, to save time.M

I have been sitting here for days, transcribing dialogue from interviews, does this work for on camera talent?
How long does it take to “train” the program for someones voice? Can the talent read a few paragraphs and then can I adjust the program in post?

The “PreSonus Fader Port” is the device to get for the price. Works great, single fader, very smooth (I’m sooo analogue) plenty of buttons and sits next to my keyboard without issue of being too big. Took a while to configure for win7/64 VP11, but I found an alternate installer and it now works perfectly. Much easier to write points on the envelope for volume and panning, should have bought one years ago.

If the “client” was also the producer, and hired you as technical crew, then they got what they deserved, even if they are stupid.

I’m a producer/director, no “client” of mine would ever be permitted to “ask questions” or provide direction, that’s my realm, if they don’t like it then I walk. If they don’t’ like the film “they” made, they are going to blame you anyway and you won’t work there again. I don’t’ make crap, and when the “client” directs his own film, that’s the only thing they can make.
I have asked, tersely, employees to leave the set. I am not there to please anyone, I’m hired to make a film. If the film is not good enough to show on my personal website, why did I make it? For money? it’s easier to make money doing something else than filmmaking.

You don’t get reactions like this from “clients” or the audience if you let them direct and produce, it will never happen. Part of being a “consultant” =filmmaker/producer/director; is to tell (TELL) the client when they are being stupid and to back off and let you do your job without them screwing up the project. I really don’t care if they “like me” I’m there to do a job; I’ve been out of grammar school for decades, all I care about is doing great work and collecting a check and going on to the next client.
