I went from VP to Premiere to Resolve, and like Resolve 12.5 a lot. You do need an audio program and I chose Reaper as it’s powerful and inexpensive; ProTools is the obvious choice for Resolve as it renders out a ProTools compatible file. I also picked up Borris Contininum Complete, a great package and works with Resolve, you can also find OpenFX plugins that work with Resolve, but not all do, so choose wisely, Audio FX is an issue, the Sony ones do not work, but the Reaper ones do! Now if they would enable an audio control surface operation I would be very happy, I hate doing a scratch mix with a mouse.

Don’t use “color navigator” unless you are using an external probe. If you use the internal probe then use the settings within the monitors menus. You want “REC 709” and then choose your gamma for your expected viewing environment. The GC277 is a great monitor, do read all the manuals on color management as this is not a monitor for people who do not take color seriously and are willing to learn how to use the device.

Handling double system sound on the CLIP level! Avid, Davinci Resolve (now), Premiere Pro, etc, etc… I moved away from Vegas to Premiere, now Resolve, and using Vegas for audio mixing, etc, because of how Vegas does not link multitrack audio on the clip level, only on the timeline.

  • I have the Bella DV 3.0, now discontinued! It was great with VEgas pro, but now that I’m using Premiere, not so good, it is “choppy” whereas Vegas was very smooth. JKL keys work fine, why not the jog/shuttle? I was thinking of getting the Contour product, but if it’s not smooth, no point over the JKL keys for me.

  • I have been using a Bella DVkeyboard 3.0 for years, great product! Sad that they went under. I called the company a few months ago to buy new keycaps to replace some worn ones.

January 7, 2015 at 9:24 pm in reply to: OK. So, what’s Sony Vegas lacking?

Not handling double system sound as a “married clip” is my biggest issue with VP13. I’m OK with using plural eyes to synch, but using another instance of VP as a “trim bin” just to be able to keep video and audio in synch is unworkable with large projects. I’m exploring Premiere Pro Cc now and cutting my first short projects on it. Having used VP since V8.0, I am surprised Sony never considered fixing this issue, but as other NLE’s handle double system sound better, I may be moving on.

  • The DR680 has 6 discrete inputs 4 phantom powered XLR and 2 1/4 TRS phantom powered. The other 2 “tracks” are an internally recorded mix down of the 6 inputs.

2 recorders can be “ganged” together for 12 tracks and one can act as the control for the other, nice feature.

The mixed down output can be sent to a camera, or wirelessly to multiple cameras for a scratch track.

A versatile recorder, available for less $ now than when I bought it. I have used it for a while and though it’s not built as rugged as a Sound Devices product, with a good case I have had zero reliability issues while recording 2~6 tracks of dialogue to synch with camera audio.

The only “feature” I wish it had would be able to “bounce” a track so I could record it at a lower volume at the same time. The 60D does this, perhaps the 70D as well, it’s smaller and a 4 track, so could be a future purchase.

A good article on color correction, and how to match cameras on set.

I’ll have to do the GPU test, sounds interesting. Doubtful the card is maxed out, I set the driver to use both cards for CUDA, and the same setting in Davinci is possible too. “Display GPU to accelerate CPU” or something like that.

3 monitors with one card works well. I have one for displays and the other for GPU acceleration.
