Hey Max,

It really comes down to what your end destination is for the podcast, and how much other equipment that you’ll need?

Do you want to stream live?
Is your preference HDMI or SDI out?
(I/P is also a consideration)
Will there be a live-mix, or is it post-produced.
There is no right answer to this, as it is all about your needs and built in flexibility.

Last year I went overboard with Elgato. I have yet to set the webcam up as I have both Canon EOS-R50 / iPhone and iPad. But they are currently only used for stop frame animation.
Their lighting gear is great to work with, and the overhead camera mount works a treat.

A friend of mine pointed me to Elgato, as they and other users have put together a list of cameras that are suitable for streaming (HDMI), including whether you can switch in on-screen info off for streaming, and if the battery has unlimited runtime:

Obviously if you are leaning towards SDI, then your set-up could potentially be different.

Start with the end in mind, and work your way from there – by the sound of it, you already have the cameras sorted, so you just need to connect the dots.

How much money do you want to spend?

Even if your current processor is 7-years old, you may find if you can upgrade your RAM to 64GB or higher. And, find some fast drives, that this might help it speed up.
Also check whether there are internal slots for SSD expansion?

Last year I got a HP Laptop where I “upgraded” the RAM to 128GB and added 2 x 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD drives to the 1TB already installed for Windows – still got space for another 4TB.

This is the first system that I’ve had where Adobe is running out of memory (128 GB) when rendering out a basic video file…

On external drives, I like both the Samsung T7 4TB, and their T9 2TB drive – the T9 is the fastest.
You could also look at a NAS or similar. There is endless options, but you might want to make sure that your laptop has thunderbolt 4 (HP has). Thunderbolt 5 is one the way into the production line. Adding to that, depending on the amount of footage, you may want a 4-port Thunderbolt hub.

It all comes down to your budget. And then, even with all of the money in the world, you might still not get what you want.

Hey Lopici,

Assuming that the time-lapse has been processed to deal with exposure changes and other fun stuff that happens when one is standing in a spot for hours and hours, you could just import the sequence as an “image sequence”, so it appears as a video asset.

With regard to the size of it, as Larry suggested, when you pop it in the timeline, you can use the Effects Controls to re-size, add keyframes to make Zoom and Pan across the video.

Using a nested sequence within your HD Sequence is another consideration.

But it all comes down to the power of your hardware and the length of your time-lapse, in which case it might be more economically to turn the JPeg images into video?

Many potential solutions, but keep in mind that you will always end up on 1920×1080. So you might “only” need something that is 4,000 in width, rather than 7,008?
Only you will know, when you see it on your screen.

Hey Jiri,

Apple had always been known for doing their own thing, with no care for users, or App developers, sadly.

My advice is for you to report problem to Blackmagic to find out if they are working on a fix.

Or, alternatively, if you can, roll your FCPX version back to one that you know that it will work inside.
Because often FCPX “upgrades” brakes things that did not needed to be fixed – particularly when it comes to using third-party “plug-ins”.

Hey Jiri,

There are much smarter people around here, who knows more about proxies and FCPX than I do. However, as some of them might be in another time-zone. I’ll give it a go:

FCPX 10.7.1 won’t let me link to externally created proxies (by
Blackmagic Proxy Generator – I need to retain file/folder structure).

Why are you using the Blackmagic Proxy Generator?
As in, and it is a qualified guess, how will FCPX properly see those files as proxies versus that of those files being the full resolution original files?

Adding that if you have the originals on a drive, why not edit from those?
Or create the proxies inside FCPX?

In short: It is most likely that FCPX does not see the Blackmagic generated proxies, as proxies.
Might be that you need both the Proxies and the Original files to be present at the same time, either on internal or external storage, for Apple to play nicely with them all.

As said, just one opinion – hopefully others will have a quicker fix.

I normally try to offer different options, and not to single anyone out unless there is only one of a kind.

But Phantazma was excellent in pre-purchase support, and contacting me after I made my purchases.

One really important thing for my work with broadcasters and films, is that I can not violate a licenced product. It is often difficult to check, but I got a clear answer on this one. So happy to recommend.

But client videos, YouTube channels and videos (even with ad rev), are Regular License.

If you are Social Media only, then it might work for you, but do be prepared for 7GB of fun…

I am in the fortunate position so far of not having to go to proxies, as my system can handle full 4K resolution.

Adding, that Adobe is going out of their way to ruin the workflow for single users. So with a bit of bad luck, depending on your subscription, you may have fallen into the gap where Adobe decided to shut down the Cloud in Adobe Cloud.

However, this might be what you are looking for:

Detach proxies

You can detach a proxy if you want to recreate a new proxy or if you don’t need proxies any longer.

To detach proxies from your clips, right-click the clip in the Project panel and select Proxy > Detach Proxy.

Note:

When you detach a proxy, Premiere Pro does not delete the proxy files on disk – to avoid deleting files or proxies that could be referenced in another project. You can decide to keep or delete the proxy files.

Interesting job. There isn\’t really enough time to experience the shakes because of the fast pace of the cuts.

Do check what they are giving away.

There are plenty of other web depositories that can provide the same style.

Do read the small print when it comes to the licence.

If your original footage is longer, and you want a \”perfect\” match. You could consider tracking one shot with \”small camera shakes\”, and apply that tracking data to a shot with no shakes. You will still have to use manual resize to fill the frame.

The same with \”crash\” zooms – you are most likely better off doing that manually in the Effects Control panel (keyframe), as you have to work out when and where you want the zoom to land.

Hey Eric,

When I went to school to learn about video, they handed me a Nikon F73 (35mm film).
It was back then the go to for press and reportage photography.

I can see how RED could be having a tough time, where Blackmagic and others are eating into the bottom part of the market, and ARRI and SONY, are eating in to the high-end (Yes, I’ve missed out alot of brands on this list).

I suspect that RED will benefit from Nikon distribution and repair centres + by merging the two companies R&D together, they’ll be in with chance to compete.
