Hey David,

In the UK we sometimes see flash-sales on Samsung SSDs. Last year I got a 4TB T7 at an eye-watering low cost (50% off Samsung direct).

However, keep in mind that the T9 is nearly double the speed at 2,000 Mbps, you might have a good deal already over the T7 (1,000 Mbps). Both the T7 and T9 can be used on video cameras as external capture drives. Depending on what your work-flow is, and what clients you work with, maybe a “short-cut” is to ask the client to deliver the footage on a T9 drive, that you then use in the edit.

Just thinking out loud. Sorry 😀

For the price, the 4TB is not bad. But as soon I have said that, you’ll start looking at the slower 460 Mbps Samsung T5 EVO Portable SSD USB 3.2 Gen 1 drive that comes in a 8TB flavour.
Even if not usable in the edit, it does suggest that other 8TB SSDs are not far behind.

Hey Paul,

Some 24 years ago I had one of the first tri-level sync generators. They are good fun, intended back then to harm your pocket and a box that no-one understood. Except that it does something at 24fps…

A trick question for you: What happens if you disconnect the tri-level, and just treat the 29.97fps as a normal 29.97fps with no “converter” box inbetween?

What might happen is that your pro-audio out follows the video, but the “conversion” to analogue out audio to head-phones can not cope.

I know – this shouldn’t be the issue, but do humour me 😉

Hey Bob,

There are several recent discussions on new editing computers right here on the COW.

All I can add is that a NVidia RTX Ada should be on your list.

Make sure that you have enough expansion slots for up to 128GB Ram and 1TB SSD for boot and 12TB SSD for media and other fun.
Latest i9 processor should be fine, but there are new processors coming out to take advantage of A.I..

With regard to the serial 12,000 number change, I found this note on play-back:

When the serial number of this unit is lower than 12001
Double-speed playback requires the HKSR-5803HQ
(option).
• When the serial number of this unit is 12001 or higher
Double-speed playback is standard and does not require
the HKSR-5803HQ (option).
• The DIGITAL I/O (AES/EBU) INPUT/OUTPUT
connectors cannot be used for double-speed playback/
recording.
• Only a limited number of devices can support signals
processed for double-speed playback.

And:

HKSR-5802 Digital Betacam/HDCAM Processor
Board
This allows you to play back Digital Betacam or HDCAM
tapes and output SD and HD signals.
When the system is operated in 4:4:4 mode, up conversion
of the output to HD signals are possible as follows,
depending on the system setting.
1080: Up conversion to 1080.
720: Up conversion to 720P.
When the system is operated in 4:4:4 mode, no upconverted
HD output can be obtained.

Based on this I’m wondering whether you are doing a up-convert and/or cross-convert?
Like a NTSC Digital Betacam 30 fps to HD 23.97fps?

You might already have looked at this menu, but repeating just in case:

The audio signal output status is specified by the following
settings of the VTR SETUP menu item 017 “PB/EE
SELECT MENU”.
EE: The input audio is always output.
MU: The audio output is always turned off.
PB: The playback signal is always output.

If brave, you could consider a “Factory Reset”, but is likely to come with a “Point of NO Return” attched…

If all of that fails, it may be a faulty switch or a sticky button that needs a good clean.

Although, if you “can hear through the AES/EBU out and the SDI embedded audio the tapes’ audio.” then it might just be easier not to fix something that is not broke, although you can’t use the Phones out. At least you’ll be able to continue to do the work…

Hey Paul,

That takes me back years, although never got a lot of experience on the SRW’s.

A quick look at the manual I wonder whether your VTR thinks that it is part of an editing chain?
Could be a remote switch, or a cable input on the back of the VTR.

Found this in the manual on Page 142 – menu list.

Maybe a good place to start?

Hey Daniel,

I’ve tried again, and can’t replicate your issue.
Tried the new sound panel that can ID what is on the track.
Made no difference.

Did notice that “Labels” has been changed in prefrences, but that is only to do with colors.
Maybe there is a bit of “rogue” code for a future version hanging around.
Could be if you use Teams or Production, that it changes the view?

If you can, maybe roll back your PPro to an earlier install?

Either way, it is one for the Adobe engineers to answer.

1TB, even 2TB, sounds like small amount of storage for a series.
Are you off-line, or on-line?
And, what is the file format? (HD/2K/4K)

Samsung T9 is nice and fast, but not thunderbolt (1TB/2TB/4TB options)

You could also look at a 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, which will need an enclosure.

Going further up the chain you can get Thunderbolt SSD drive stacks, or even enterprise storage.

But question is going to take you back to the original point about the “size” of your source files?
And, maybe consider how they’ll be backed up?

I have unsuccesfully tried to replicate your issue in my version of PPro.

However, as the audio clips appears to be grouped, are they part of a surround recording setup?
(unlikely as the waveform(s) looks identical)

I can only think of two causes, that might be interlinked:

1) You have all the clips in a multi-cam sequence, and that this is why PPro give you the individual track identifications from source?

2) Maybe try select all, and unlink all of the of the clips and see what happens?

Hey Charles,

The bigger news is the Apple-Blackmagic tie up on the immersive camera, which naturally leads to Davinci for the grade. But the cost of the Apple Vision Pro headset makes the whole set-up a bit of a joke, unless the Blackmagic camera and NLE will allow you to publish to other platforms?

FCPX IMHO has been suffering a slow death for years, and the money seems on getting FCPX on to the iPad. So Apple can charge a monthly/annual subscription fee for it.

Too little, too late if you ask me. Apple has been forced to use outside partners, rather than develop their own camera (Blackmagic) or A.I. engine (ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI which has got Microsoft as a major shareholder).

Smacks of desperation from a company that has lost the innovative touch.

But it does raise concerns on privacy and A.I., so I might shortly swap my iPhone for a Nokia… 🤔😀

Hey Robert,

Not sure what the purpose is for uploading more than 2-channels, unless you are going surround sound?

You’ll be better off with the master still on YouTube, but offer a link in info to a Google-drive folder, dropbox or similar to download from.

Please note that Adobe has just suggested that they want to ascertain copyright over your work created using some of their tools. Still a bit early, but from reactions seen elsewhere, the end is near for Adobe professional tools.
In short: Adobe management has lost the plot.

But that won’t change your file with 4 audio tracks, or one video with stereo mix and additional Audio Wave Stems to download. Don’t forget your sync-blobs.
