I agree with this. It’s one thing for the products to have limitations; but when that limit is not even mentioned, it’s a big problem.

Personally I think BMD should be accountable for this lack of information, and should offer to swap out these customers SD cards for HD ones so they can get on with their work (how abou t an upgrade program?).

I can hardly imagine configuring a new Mac Pro as a professional workstation and choosing to install only 2GB of RAM, except when hamstrung by this kind of problem. These machines support up to 16GB for a reason, and as we are all waiting for Leopard to allow FCP to address more than the current 4GB per application limit (a trend also obviously being pushed by FCS 2 and Adobe CS3 for that mater) the time for resolving this 2GB thing is WAY overdue.

Sorry BMD you really dropped the ball on that one. Shame.

yeah I’ve tried to test that and it still get the problem, though less. Performance seems also hampered by the big project I’m working on, long timelines, etc. But yeah, I keep wondering if something went wrong at some point in the installation because it just doesn’t seem right.

they have some XML tools and their own text generator, allowing you to build your titles as a text file and then just generate a timeline full of pre-built generators all with identical settings you specify. Could be the best workflow for you, but several steps. It’ll take some work to get it right probably.

That last technique — rendering to fields and then deinterlacing — suggests that the solution might be to increase the shutter angle so you get more motion blur in the final render. You shouldn’t have to render to fields and then deinterlace, you’re going to lose sharpness unnecessarily.

26 inches might be big but if you can place it farther away it can be nice to be able to change focus from the computer screen to the viewing screen. I had been editing a project on a 14″ monitor for ages and then just sprung for a cheap (relative to the 14″ monitor) 21″ TV so I could see the image bigger, and put it a little farther away…and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. You need to really SEE what you’re doing!

I see the point about platform independency; but having slogged my way through to figure out the basic titling using the generators in FCP for example — on my own — I think there’s an amazing secret here for those of us using FCStudio and who are trying to make their titling work with Motion and/or Livetype. So I second the motion about workflow-oriented tutorials. For a lot of purposes (above all, static lower 3rds) Boris’ software in FCP is far superior to using .motn files etc. It is simply more processor efficient and allows you to just get your work DONE! Tips and tricks on designing real-world basic good looking titling for EDITORS and not necessarily for Motion graphics people would be a real boost. But of course that is also a Graffiti thing, so maybe this is misplaced..

Hmmm… I have almost the exact same system as you and haven’t seen this for some time; but when I did have it I was able to fix it by trashing the title 3d prefs. Are you sure you’re getting them all? You might want to do a search for “boris”.

If you’ve got any budget to fix this, you could also try recapturing from a high-end sony DV deck like a DSR 1800 or DSR 2000 these decks have tracking and error control hardware that can save bad recordings, so I’ve heard (sometimes).

If this is to be your backup solution for material you’ve shot and you have no other backup i.e. tape, you should consider a RAID 1 setup. You can buy dual drive enclosures from otherworldcomputing that go up to 750GB in mirrored format (two drives in one enclosure, each with identical data). They sell them in a RAID 1 version, with a copy of SoftRAID which is the best software for doing mirrors (better than OSX). This will give you some security against one drive failing, and SoftRAID will warn you of any errors at any point

There is also a program called YouPod, which saves them to iPod MPEG4 format. I dunno if there is a program which will allow you to specify the codec you want them in
