A single Xserve RAID is not enough for 4:4:4 HD. We see about 230 MB/sec read and write when we stripe each array of 7 disks as RAID 0 and then stripe across both channels. This is a good speed for HD 4:2:2 but is insufficient for HD 4:4:4.
Disk arrays for HD 4:4:4 include 4GB Fibre Channel disk arrays from Huge Systems or Medea or you can build your own from 8 U320 SCSI Cheetah disks running at 10,000 rpm and place them in a U320 SCSI JBOD. I have personally found wiring up the JBOD to be particularly frustrating and just love the prebuilt disk arrays from Huge Systems as they are very fast and suitable for this purpose.

Hi,
I think the option to mirror displays is usually controlled by your graphics card. Of course, that is simple as the assumption is made the you might want to mirror two displays connected to the one graphics card.
In this case you want to mirror two displays on two graphics/video cards and I don’t think there is a Windows setting for that. I certainly couldn’t find one but maybe someone else in this forum can help.
If you could find a way to make this happen, the output through DeckLink might look poor as it would not be normal to display your Windows desktop at the lower resolutions of TV.
What are you trying to achieve? There might be another way to do what you want to do.

Hi Margus,
Once the DeckLink HD series cards have been migrated from PCI-X to PCIe in the next few weeks, I would expect you will be able to use a low cost Dual Core system for HD. I cannot guarantee that yet as we’ve only verified them for SD but it is our belief that HD will also be possible as these machines are really very fast via PCIe and with their dual core processors.

Hi Paul,
I wonder if it was a simple thing such as changing the Easy Setup without creating a new sequence? That could explain why the new project allowed you to use your files without rendering?
BTW, is there some reason why you are capturing via SDI to the DVCPRO HD codec from a DVCPRO HD deck? This will lead to decompression and recompression cycles and hence generational loss.
It might be better to capture the DVCPRO HD material via FireWire before outputting through the DeckLink HD card for monitoring or to a D5 deck. This would just cause a single decompression cycle and should result in better quality.

That preference was moved to the Preferences for Blackmagic Deck Control where it should have been all along. I have already requested a shortcut key for the Preferences so hopefully that will be available in the next release.

The Blackmagic HDTV 1080i50 HDV easy setup is using the native HDV sequence. It just configures the video to output via HD-SDI and also to use Blackmagic RS-422 device control for the deck.
It is invoking Apple’s HDV format and just routing it out via your DeckLink card.
Actually there is a lot going on with the compressed HDV 1440 x 1080 video (which you captured via FireWire) being decompressed and scaled to 1920 x 1080 for uncompressed output and also down converted from HDTV 1080i50 to PAL at the same time! It’s pretty powerful technology.

Hi Dan,
The HDV codec provided by Final Cut Pro HD 5.0 on the Mac is not available on Windows. There are HDV codecs available for Windows but they are not the same codec and might not be compatible.
If you have captured HDV material via FireWire using Final Cut Pro HD, you could play out the HDV material via a DeckLink HD card in the G5 and then capture it via HD-SDI on the PC using any DeckLink HD series card. Capture to an 8 or 10-bit uncompressed format. This will preserve maximum quality and you will be able to edit the vide on the PC without any generational loss which occurs with compressed codecs.
