Hi Chris,
I suspect it was not a BM engineer with whom you are speaking as we have some support for mixed media in FCP5 with DeckLink v5 drivers. You can certainly mix 8 and 10 bit clips on the one timeline in real time. I’m not sure whether other combinations will be available but am trying to find out more information myself.

Hi Kevin,
In standard definition, we capture using the Apple codec and not the Blackmagic codec. So you want to choose Apple’s “Uncompressed 8 bit PAL” setting rather than the Blackmagic 8 bit setting in any export options. Sometimes QuickTime 6.5.2 (and older) accidentally invokes the Blackmagic codec even when you have specified the Apple codec. If this is happening to you, quit from the application (FCP, QuickTime Player, etc) remove the Blackmagic codec from /Library/QuickTime/ and then try again. Don’t forget to reinstate the Blackmagic codec when finished.
We’ve been working with Apple to overcome such problems and the combination of Final Cut Pro HD v5.0 with the DeckLink v5.0 drivers should no longer exhibit this problem.

Hi Julie,
Right now we are just focussing on desktop machines as they have plenty of bandwidth and also can take extra cards for your disk array, eg a SCSI card. Laptops do have some impressive technology in them these days and I don’t think it will be long before they are quite adequate for some uncompressed video tasks. However for the moment there is no way for us to connect to them and there would also be the storage issue. For these reasons, we see desktop machines as the only option for the forseeable future but it would not surprise me if laptops come of age soon.

Hi Nick,
Sorry but I have mislead you. DeckLink works in 720p/24 when using uncompressed formats but not with DVCPRO HD. I’m not sure if this will change with FCP5.

You also need the DeckLink Macintosh v4.8 drivers from the Support page of our web site. They are the first version of the drivers to include the Photoshop plug-ins.

I think that manually setting NTSC 8-bit is part of the problem. Create a HDTV 1080i/59.94 DVCPRO HD project using the Blackmagic easy setups. Now just play the timeline and it should output as NTSC. You can choose between anamorphic and letterbox down conversion using the DeckLink PrefPane in the System Preferences. 720p downconversion has not yet been implemented and we had hoped to do it a while ago but it is still something we want to add. Tiger, FCP5 and NAB 2005 have kept our engineers busy but they want to add this as soon as they get a chance.

Yes, we include a number of Varicam easy setups for 720p, including 720p/24. It should work fine.

Firstly, please note that the PCIe models of Multibridge are due this northern summer and are not shipping yet.
Having said that, the system requirements should be pretty much the same as the current DeckLink HD series cards. I know you want to buy a machine now but the most reliable system specifications will be published closer to the time.
Many current motherboards have both PCI-X and PCIe. The new Multibridges will require a 4-lane PCIe slot for HD or only a 1-lane slot for SD. You will also need a 16-lane slot for your graphics card.

Hi Damir,
You’ll see plenty of RT on a DVCPRO HD timeline. If you have an uncompressed 8-bit HD timeline, set the effect handling to Blackmagic HD and you will get 3-way color correction and a number of image control effects. I don’t think you will get any RT effects in 10-bit HD at the moment although we’ll look at that again and see if it is now possible.

Hi Brian,
I’m not sure if software downconversion of HDV is possible but we’ll definitely check it out. The DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 card can perform hardware downconversion of pretty much anything including JPEG so I expect it will work with HDV. I’m not sure that anyone has tested this but we will do so before the drivers ship.
