Yes, the developers on the Blackmagic Developer Mailing List are already testing the DeckLink v4.9 beta drivers and they will be released when we think they are ready. The developers have given us some great feedback and so we’re implementing those changes now so hopefully they will be available soon. I don’t have a list of specific features for you but I do know this is release contains a major update for our DirectShow support. This is primarily of relevance to developers and is not something that end-users will notice but it has flow-on benefits to DirectShow-savvy applications such as Vegas 6.
I’m not sure why you are anxious about the next release unless there is a specific issue (new feature or bugfix) you are hoping is addressed in the new version. I’m not sure from where you determined the release date as I’m not aware of a firm date. I can only guess that someone from Blackmagic said “in a couple of months” and that rough timeline has now passed. Regardless, the v4.9 drivers are out of development and in beta testing so we shouldn’t have to wait much longer.

Yes and No. With Final Cut Pro HD v5.0 and DeckLink Macintosh v5.0 drivers, you can mix some different formats together on the same timeline. However exactly what you can mix together without rendering is dictated by the speed of your Mac. The faster Macs can mix a range of compressed codecs on the same timeline. Having said that, there is no documentation Final Cut Pro documentation which would provide an idea of what you can expect to work and therefore one simply has to experiment with a system to determine its capabilities.
Even though a FCP5/DeckLink5 setup can playback some mixed compressed codecs on the same timeline on faster G5’s, I would highly recommend rendering all the material to one format before recording to tape. However the ability to mix formats on the same timeline can be a real timesaver when editing.

We’re not replicating your exact problem here but on a system with a slower SATA disk array, we find that the broadcast monitor displays jerky video if we use the J or L buttons to play too fast. I wonder if your issue could be related to the speed of your disk array. Please run Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and see if your disk array appears to be fast enough for the video formats with which you are working. It is also a good idea to ensure you are using the latest DeckLink Windows v4.8.1 drivers.

It sounds as though your G5 has PCI-X slots so you should have no problems using DeckLink cards. If you want to make sure, please see the following technical note:
https://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=76As Adam mentioned, if you simply need to connnect to a Digibeta, then the base model $295 DeckLink card is all you need. It also has a spare SDI monitoring port which you can connect to an SDI monitor. These monitors can be expensive and many people prefer to use low cost analog video monitors. That’s why we make the $595 DeckLink Pro which is similar to the base model DeckLink card. It can connect to your Digibeta but also has analog video monitoring output. This can be switched between YUV component and composite analog video output. This card also includes genlock in case you need to lock to an external reference signal. My guess is this would be the card for you.
Your Mac is also capable of HD work. If you are going to work in HD, then the equivalent HD cards are the $595 DeckLink HD and the $1495 DeckLink HD Pro 4:2:2 respectively.
In regards to potential interference from your graphics card, this is not an issue for digital connections such as the SDI connections between the DeckLink card and your deck. It is only an issue for analog components and could potentially affect the analog video monitoring output of the DeckLink Pro card. Graphics cards from NVIDIA are shielded and do not cause interference with analog components. Hi Massimino,
Mixing 8 and 10-bit uncompressed on the timeline certainly works. It is also possible to mix other formats on the same timeline but this is dependant upon on the speed of your Mac. The faster your Mac, the more options will be available. There have been some previous discussions in this forum about successfully mixing compressed formats on the same timeline but those DeckLink users were experimenting on G5’s. The only way to know what works is to run some tests on your own setup and find what works and what doesn’t. My guess is that you won’t succeed with alternative formats on your dual G4/800 but it doesn’t hurt to try.
BTW, how is FCP5 and DeckLink going on your dual G4/800? That model of machine is below what we now recommend for FCP5 so I’d be interested to know how it is going?

We deliberately do not include a 1080p 25Hz easy setup although it would be easy to do as the card is programmable. Most people use 1080i/50 with both interlaced and progressive video. There is a 1080p 25Hz standard but it’s incredibly rare and we haven’t had any requests for it. We haven’t included a 1080p easy setup for 25Hz as customers would then use the wrong easy setup in many cases. We could add 1080p 25Hz support in a heart beat if required.
