Hi Ola,
The new card has exactly the same “DeckLink HD Extreme 3D” packaging as before but has the addition of a HDMI 1.4 sticker on the box to indicate it is the new model of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D.

There is a small but nice hardware update in the DeckLink HD Extreme 3D+ card to support HDMI 1.4a. However due to the lack of slots in the Mac Pro, most Resolve for Mac users will not install the HDMI bracket as all the slots will be filled with graphics cards, a HBA card to disk storage and a DeckLink card. Some of the Resolve for Linux systems will have space for the HDMI bracket as these systems have more slots available.
The previous DeckLink HD Extreme 3D card supported HDMI 1.3. When working in 3D, HDMI 1.3 supports the following stereoscopic modes: line-by-line, side-by-side, top-and-bottom. These are half resolution 3D modes as you’re effectively presenting two images at the same time so there is only space for half of the picture from each “eye”.
The new DeckLink HD Extreme 3D+ card has a small hardware update to support HDMI 1.4a. When working in 3D, HDMI 1.4 supports the following stereoscopic modes: line-by-line, side-by-side, top-and-bottom and frame packing. The first three modes are half resolution 3D modes. HDMI 1.4a introduced the “frame packing” mode which presents 3D video at double the traditional frame rate so you see both eyes at full resolution. There is no compromise on quality.

The new card is not required for Resolve. Resolve 7.0.1 will continue to support DeckLink HD Extreme 3, DeckLink HD Extreme 3D and DeckLink HD Extreme 3D+.
Finally, both models of DeckLink HD Extreme 3D cards support dual stream 3D via SDI so you see full resolution 3D via SDI.

Hi Jay,
Unfortunately your Mac Pro is a first generation Mac Pro which has PCI Express 1.0 slots. A newer Mac Pro with PCI Express 2.0 slots is required to run the two NVIDIA graphics cards required by Resolve.
Having said that, your Mac Pro is still a great machine for Final Cut Pro and it’s only because of the massive amount of processing performed during grading that a newer Mac Pro is required for Resolve.

Hi Tony,
Dale is correct about HDCP on the PS3. You should be able to capture via component analog which is the highest quality analog and supports HD as well as SD video. Component analog uses three cables which typically have red, green and blue connectors. You can then monitor via the HDMI output of your Intensity Shuttle for maximum quality. There is no need to use component analog output as HDMI is digital and the best option to use whenever possible.

Further to Alan’s excellent reply, the HDMI output of a regular PS3 has HDCP enabled so you won’t be able to capture from it. The developer version of the PS3 does allow capture from the HDMI output for developers who need this function.

Hi Paul,
I have just received the following information from the Resolve product manager, Peter Chamberlain, who is at IBC.
“The minimum screen resolution is 1920×1080. The Resolve application interface is optimized for 1920×1200 but will also work at higher screen resolutions.”
We haven’t tested on the yet to be released Apple 27″ display but would expect it to work fine. Resolve works fine on a 30″ display.

Faster and more CPU cores will mainly help when working with compressed files such as ProRes and DNxHD, or if you’re working with RED r3d files and don’t have a RED Rocket card.
I would not expect much difference between two generations of 8-Core systems at the same 2.93 Ghz speed. There might be some incremental speed benefits in the new machine but nothing major. However an upgrade from 8-Core to 12-Core should be a great benefit. We’re currently certifying mid-2010 Mac Pro computers and should have an updated guide in the next fortnight.

DVI is always limited to 8-bit as the DVI specification only allows for 8-bit. The same people who created DVI subsequently created DisplayPort which allows for deeper color and higher bit depths. However no matter whether you have a DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort port, a DVI monitor will always be limited to 8-bit.

Resolve on a Mac Pro does not derive any benefit from a RED Rocket card in processing 2K files unless those files happen to be RED r3d files. If the 2K files are RED r3d files, then the RED Rocket will accelerate decoding and debayering of the r3d files and realtime performance will be achieved at full resolution and premium debayer quality.
According to the Premiere Pro CS5.0.2 notes, Premiere Pro CS5.0.2 only uses the RED Rocket card for accelerated decoding and debayering of RED r3d files and the card is not used for 2K files in any other format.

Hi Ben,
Please contact Blackmagic Support for help with your RS-422 connection. All DeckLink cards have 3 year warranties so if the port is defective, they’ll be able to swap out the card for you as the original DeckLink Studio was release less than 3 years ago.
