Plus, the analogy doesn’t hold given that you have to continuously buy print cartridges in order to use the printer.
Whereas, with P2 cards, you could be fine with 2 or 3 cards for the life of your camera.

So, other than the fact that they both may seem expensive, they don’t seem have much else in common.

I really hope you’re wrong on this… if not then I’m starting to experience some serious buyer’s remorse.

I’d like to hear from anyone else here running FCP5.
Are other people having the same issues?
Is anyone NOT having this mouse issue?

I was running Avid on a 1.6Gb chip with only 512Mb of ram, and it seemed to be more responsive than FCP on my new PowerMac. Something has to be wrong here.

I’ll post in the feedback forum like you suggested.
    Thanks for the reply.

May 26, 2005 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Question for the Panasonic reps

    [Jan Crittenden Livingston] “Hi Luis,
Well we are aiming for end of August. And from what I have seen here, in Osaka, it will be close. Remember the DVX first showed images at WEVA in August, so that is probably first. If I can get file footage before I wil share, but not sure. All I can say is that I am pretty jazzed.”

    That’s great to hear Jan.
I didn’t actually expect any additional information, I was more just poking a little fun at the idea of speculation on yet another new Panasonic camera before the HVX has even been shown off in full form.

Keep us posted on any possible WEVA unveiling, I can always use an excuse to go to Vegas.

Hope you’re having at least a little bit of time to enjoy Japan between your work hours.

    [toke lahti] “Jan,
can you leak us a bit info about when will the next camera model be announced?”

NAB is barely over, the HVX isn’t even out yet and we’re already speculating on the “next” model to be released…

How about leaking some info about when a working model of the HVX will be shown off.

  • You might want to ask over at the Varicam forum Michael.
You’ll probably have much better luck finding an answer.

[Jody] “This posturing as to the ridiculousness of such a possibility is itself laughable. I suppose that until some of the posters here own and regualrly shoot with an F900 AND a Z1U and have that footage on primetime network dramas aired in HD, they just won’t believe it can be done. But it is being done, so get over it guys. It works fine. Remain calm. Do not panic. “

    Jody,

Thanks for adding to the discussion here.
It’s always much better to hear stuff form the source than a third party.

I think your quotes that started this discussion were taken out of context a bit, and quite honestly made your comments seem as ‘laughable’ as mine may seem to you. Your comments make a lot of sense though…I mean, who can really argue if it’s being done?

Like I said in my post earlier, quality isn’t in the specs, it’s in the eye of the beholder. And, in the end, it’s perceived quality that matters.
I suppose that signal goes through the wash pretty heavily by the time it’s broadcast. How do you feel the Z1 footage holds up against F900 straight off the tape? I think that’s what most people were reacting to…seeing as the quote we read was taken out of context.

And by the way, I think we’re all pretty calm here.

[kenh] “I think the blood boiling point is directly proportional to the partial pressure of vaporware! “

I defintely think that people’s reactions become much more empassioned when discussing new and emerging technologies, as these are things which have not yet been tested in real world settings and generally cause us to rethink and change the way we’ve been working. Anything that causes a big change, or the promise of big change, will always ‘rock the boat’ so to speak. The same thing is occurring with HDV, as with P2, and it’s the same sort of empassioned debates we saw back in the late 90’s with the advent of DV, and even affordable nonlinear editing.

No one knows what sort of impact, if any, these technologies will have in the long run. No one has any history or real experience to go off of, and standards and workflows have yet to really be established. So everyone winds up debating off of pure opinion and speculation. While it’s definitely true that this can get out of hand, I think it can also be very healthy and necessary when kept on topic. I know many people on this board, as well as the HDV board, have brought up workflow and produciton issues that wouldn’t have occurred to me. The key thing to remember is that we’re discussing technology here, not religion, politics, or any other personally held belief. In the end, they are just cameras.

But, to call Panasonic’s forthcoming camera “vaporware” I think is pretty unfair (and on the opposite extreme of those who become so empassioned defending these forthcoming cameras).

The camera has been announced, and a release date has been set. There hasn’t been any backpeddling from Panasonic, and there haven’t been any broken promises or false claims made. If fourth quarter comes and goes and the camera is nowhere to be seen, then we can start throwing around the term vaporware. But, seeing as this camera seems to be following the same exact release path that the DVX did, I don’t see any reason to doubt that we’ll see a release before the end of the year.

The key is simply to keep things in perspective.
There is nothing wrong with keeping an eye on the future.
We just need to make sure that we don’t lose sight of the present.
Use today the best tools that you have available to you, and produce the best work that you can with them.

    Just my two cents.

May 5, 2005 at 8:37 pm in reply to: What’s it all about Alphie?

[Noah Kadner] “That is correct- there is no intelligence inside the P2 chip to allow it to directly see an HD. It must be connected via a computer, a P2 store or the camera itself to dump contents. “

    Now I’m getting confused.

    What Barry said was:
What Panasonic has also verified is that you can use an off-the-shelf USB2 drive to dub the contents of a P2 card directly to the drive. You may not be able to capture directly to the drive, but you can dub directly to it (so, no laptop computer necessary, and no firestore-type drive is mandatory in that case; you can shoot to the card and dub it directly to any cheap off-the-shelf USB2 hard disk).

So, while there is no intelligence inside the P2 chip, is it safe to assume there is ‘intelligence’ in the HVX camera itself? Or were you saying that Barry’s claim was wrong, Noah?

Just trying to clarify, this is an issue that’s been kind of confusing since day one. I suppose nothing is set in stone until the camera is actually released.
