Question for the Panasonic reps
Posted by Kyle Self on May 22, 2005 at 12:15 amAny chance we will see a camera like the SPX 800 that will record DVC Pro HD to the P2 cards in the near future? I know I can’t be the only one around here who would jump onto a camera like that. I am stuck with not wanting to go to HDV but needing a better camera and optics than the HVX200 will provide (though I am posotive I will want 1 or 2 for b roll work).
Happy Shooting everyone,
Kyle

May 22, 2005 at 1:17 amI have no doubt such a camera will appear eventually- sort of an SDX900 for DVCPROHD. But ifyou’re looking for one with 24p I don’t know of anything official yet.

May 22, 2005 at 2:17 amPanasonic showed a D5 P2 camera in a short promo film for P2. I would not hold your breath, though. Solid state recording needs to go through a mini-revolution in technology before we see an HD P2 camera on the level of the SDX or Varicam. Even at 40mbs, it’s still a lot of data. Interestingly, a Panasonic Rep at NAB mentioned the possible use of H264 as compression scheme for a high end HD P2 camera.
I would guess we will see a prototype next year and maybe a production camera by 2007-08.

May 22, 2005 at 4:29 amI thought, and I could be completely wrong, but I thought around NAB time there was a mock up or an interview with someone at Panasonic that talked about a P2 Varicam…
I’m not sure why a new compression scheme would be needed… A Varicam sized camera would have more than two slots and would therefore be able to record longer takes…

May 22, 2005 at 10:08 amHi,
Kevin you are right, there was a P2 Varicam shown in the theater presentation. Scheduled delivery is next year, mid summer. There was also a D5 HD camera shown, and this is the beauty of P2, it is format aganostic.
Anyhow, hope that helps,
Jan

Btw, how well p2 cameras handle a take that is separated to two cards because the first one gets full in the middle of a take?
Two files?
Overlapping frames?
No cracks&pops in the changing point?

That doesn’t really help. We have a Varicam and the HVX. What about the rest of us in the middle? What are the chances that we are going to see something along the lines of the SPX-800 with an option to record DVC Pro HD, sometime in the near future?
Thanks,Kyle

May 22, 2005 at 9:15 pmIt is absolutely seamless, metadata on each card points to the other and thus when the medai is rejoined in the computer it is one clip. No ifs, and, or buts. It is one clip.
Hope that helps,
Jan

May 22, 2005 at 9:17 pmBut the SPX800 does not have an HD chip set, I thought that is what you said you wanted, was a camera that is switchable betewwn HD, and SD with better lenses. Help refine what it is you want.
Thanks,
Jan

May 22, 2005 at 9:36 pmThanks Jan,
can those two clips in separate cards from one take also work without each other?
