Panasonic has stated that the camera will be “under $10,000”
Specific pricing should be announced at NAB, along with P2 prices, etc.

We may not all be certain about all things at all times, but we can at least rally around the fact that we no longer want to use tape.
Tape may be easy, until you get a head clog in your deck like I did last week, then it’s just a pain.
Unfortunately I won’t be at NAB this year, but I look forward to living vicariously through Noah and Graeme. I hope we’ll get a chance to meet at another event sometime soon.
You know, seeing as I can’t be there this year, maybe you could just send one of those HVX200s over here, for evaluation puposes of course.

[jessecoane] “Jan has stated on dvxuser.com that the 1080 24p will be recorded in the same way the dvx does 24p. At 24 clean frames recorded at 60i with an advance pulldown. So i assume the output to dvcproHD tape would be similar. 24p with a pulldown. “
Well, if that’s true, that brings up an interesting question.
If 1080/24P is going to require the use of a pulldown, then essentially what is being recorded to the P2 cards will be 108060i?That seems awfully wasteful in terms of storage space.
That would mean the datarate on 1080/24P would be the full 100mb/s, with a good chunk of that being taken up by pulldown frames that will eventually be discarded anyhow.I wonder if Jan might be able to enlighten us on this one, or if we’ll just have to wait for NAB.

[jeremiah black] “Mastering to HD SR seems entirely cost prohibitve for people excited about a camera that costs under 10k”
Apparently my slight sarcasm doesn’t come across as well on screen as it does on the phone, Jeremiah. Yeah, I would think it wouldn’t be a realistic option for most people, you or I included. Same reason I doubt Panasonic is going to give us a 1080/24P deck. Most people at this price level won’t be buying a 20K deck to support only one shooting format on an under 10K camera.
(by the way, I love being able to say things like “one shooting format”).But you’re right, there’s got to be an easy answer, and hopefully we’ll hear it soon.

[jeremiah black] “how do we master that out to DVCPROHD tape? 1080/24p isn’t supported by any Panasonic DVCPROHD decks. Is Pansonic releasing new decks?”
I’d be shocked if we saw a new deck that recorded 1080/24P.
I mean, what would it cost? The lease expensive DVCProHD deck right now is still a bit over 20 grand. My best guess right now is that you would have to master out to another format. Of course you wouldn’t want to go to HDCam at that point, and lose color information. You could go HD-SR.
You’re right, it is a bit of a problem.
But then again, considering where we were a year ago, these are good problems to have.Hopefully Jan can chime in on this one, and give us a good indicator of what they see as the workflow for the unexpected 1080/24P that everyone is so excited about.

[Peter DeCrescenzo] “Seems to imply that the AJ-SPX800’s option card slot is similar/identical to the P2 slots”
Ahhhhhhh
I misunderstood what you were saying.
I was assuming the ‘option card’ you were talking about would go into one of the available P2 card slots. But if the option card has a dedicated slot, that changes things significantly.Of course, they’ve got to keep some tricks for the higher end cams.
I’m still thrilled about 1080/24P.
An ‘option card’ slot would just be gravy.Luis Caffesse

[Peter DeCrescenzo] “So, Panasonic and 3rd parties might offer a variety of option cards which add all sorts of features, _possibly_ such as SDI/HD-SDI output, GPS positioning, hard drive interface, customizable graphic/title/aspect-ratio “safe” markers, wired ethernet, timecode I/O, genlock, _raw_ video image data (a la Viper), and much more, depending on how much “access” a P2 slot allows to the cam’s internals. “
Peter,
That does seem to open up a whole world of possibilities.
But then again, don’t forget that the P2 Slots will probably only have access to the footage AFTER it has gone though the DVCProHD compression. So, adding HD-SDI out, or raw video image data, via a PCM card probably wouldn’t really give you the desired ‘uncompressed’ images you would get from a Viper, or from the HD-SDI out on the F900.Also, I doubt that information could be input via the card slots seeing as those slots are probably only configured to recieve information, not send it. But I’m just guessing here.
