[Graeme Nattress] “That’s why the Creative Cow should have a forum for the Red camera!”

    Absolutely Graeme, I agree.
This could be quite a ride for the next year or two, and it looks like it might be worth having a dedicated place to discuss it.

[toke lahti] “1080iP2.mov really seems to 1080i (like the name of the file) and deinterlaced from that.
Eg. movement in hand with paper etc…
    Was that really shot 1080p?”

The footage clearly shows it has a pulldown (2 interlaced frames followed by 3 progressive frames).
As far as I know this clip was shot at 1080P24 recorded onto the P2 cards, then put into a FCP edit sequence from which clips were exported as self contained QT files. The sequence, I imagine, was set to 1080i (as the pulldown added in recorded doesn’t seem to have been removed)

The hand movement you mention doesn’t really look all that strange to me, though I suppose it’s possible that it was shot using a shutter below 1/48, which would give you more motion blur than we’re used to seeing.

    Michael,

Thanks for making these available to everyone!

[Noah Kadner] “Would you read a blog by Tony the Tiger talking about how Frosted Flakes are made and how tasty they are? Would you read the Maytag Repairman’s blog about what he does with his free time”

If Tony the Tiger announced new information about the future of Frosted flakes then I’m sure people who were obsessed with the cereal would read it.
If the Maytge Rapairman announced new features and products before anyone else then I’m sure people would read it.

With as much as everyone seems to enjoy pouring over the minutiae of the HVX specs, I don’t think “Tosh” will be at any lack of readers if Panasonic continues to use that “blog” as a platform through which to announce new information. I guarantee that the day they post footage on that site, as well as the detailed specs on the CCD block of the HVX that defperception will have record traffic (and many of those hits will be from those of us who don’t really like the idea of a fake spokesman).

I don’t like it myself, I don’t think it’s an ideal marketing solution. But few things in this world are ideal.
I’ll just grin adn bear it, look past the ‘Tosh’ persona and go to the site for the information.

There is plenty of interesting discussion to be had concerning Panasonic’s marketing techniques without resorting to sweeping statements of other users character.

I just want to make sure this thread doesn’t devolve into personal attacks.
Animosity towards ‘Tosh’ is one thing…. I mean, he’s not real so he can’t exactly get offended.

You know, it looks like there might be one more reason…. the reason Jan gave more than once already.

    November 1, 2005 at 6:58 pm in reply to: 720P or 1080P at 100MBit

I just realized the error of my ways.
Ignore my last post…as I’m wrong.

    1080 is a 30fps format, while 720 is a 60fps format.
So the datarates at 24fps would differ quite a bit.

[Barry Green] At the same framerate, 1080p will always be better than 720p, as you’re getting twice as many pixels per frame. So 1080/24p is going to have twice as many pixels as 720/24p. “

Seeing as the details on the CCD block have yet to be released and we don’t yet know how exactly the HVX is going to achieve it’s 1080P footage (I think it’s safe to assume it will not have 1080 chips) isn’t it possible that 720P footage may actually be cleaner than the 1080 footage?

I’m not trying to complicate the issue, but if you consider that the footage is going to be compressed into the same datarate (when duplicate frames are removed both 1080 and 720 should be around 40Mb/s, right?) then isn’t it possible that we will see more compression artifacts in 1080 than we will in 720, due to it’s having to compress twice the pixels per frame in 1080?

I may be wrong on this, and if so I hope that Barry or someone else will correct me.
But I just wanted to point out that resolution isn’t everything when judging formats.

[Ron Shook] “BTW, the offload argument doesn’t work one whit today, although that should change dramatically over the next year. As far as I know there isn’t a single NLE in existence that can work directly with native DVCPro P2 MXF files. Only FCP comes close but that involves transcoding the files to QT, an extra time consuming step that can’t be significantly faster than realtime. All other solutions at this time that I’m aware of involve capturing DVCPro in realtime from camera or deck via Firewire.”

It was my understanding that Avid works directly with native DVCPro P2 MXF files.
And the FCP solution, while not a ‘directy’ path, is definitely faster than capturing in realtime.
