This is a complaint on my side too. I hate how it looks.
I have my idea why they did this: they wanted to achieve a “more modern look” inspired by the mess MS introduced in Windows 8. Magix just started that route. (Sorry if I hurt anyone)
This is just my guess and I would also welcome the old colorful icons back!
But there are other things, I think much more important than colors of the iconset.

Regarding the toolbars, I wish both (timeline and upper) toolbar to be fully customizable.
I mean the possibility of assignment ALL the buttons to any of the toolbars – This would add flexibility to the UI.
Also, I wish to be able to assign shortcut keys to ANY operation Vegas can do.
Say, when I want to mute/unmute an event, just press shift-ctrl-M (just an example!) instead of navigating menus.
I also would welcome a quick exit of pan/crop – effects dialog window. It is frequently uncomfortable (at least for me) to target and hit the small “X” button in the top-right corner – this would add some usability.

But these are new features, and I always prefer sort out issues with current features first, and implent new features only after there’s no apparent problem in the software. (And I find this valid for any software, not just Vegas, including those I create for myself or others around me.)

When do you use Vegas on that laptop, is the power plugged in?
Notebooks tend to reduce clock speed everywhere when running on battery.
When it is not responding what activity do you see on the machine?
(CPU/GPU/Disk)

On my Lenovo z51-70 with i5-5200u CPU and AMD r9-m375 Vegas 14 runs just smooth.
It does not come near to my desktop in performance, but it’s usable for some simple on-the-field edits.

Vegas 14 has a new, adaptive deinterlacing method, which is just the same Yadif does.
And for the previous versions there’s Yadif 😉

Without knowing the details, just the fact that it’s another gaming video targeting highest quality, I bet it is about using the deblocking filter in combination with an insane high bitrate ?

Hi,

I assume you mistyped and the friend shot the wedding interlaced, not progressive.
If you set the media properties to “progressive”, Vegas won’t deinterlace it, becuase it thinks it is progressive.
Thus the lines a noticeable.
Set it to the correct field order: “upper field first”.
So the deinterlaceing will be done by Vegas.
Another option is that you apply Yadif deinterlacer as mediaFX, this gives better deinterlace, than Vegas13 builtin (it is much slower as well). If you do this, no need to do another deinterlace by Vegas, so you can keep it flagged as progressive.

I think, the recording software locks the file for write acces (this is obvious), but allows it to open for read access – this is a polite thing, and not obvious, it could create the file with exclusive flag, so no other process could access it even for read until closed-.
Your player software (winamp, etc.) needs the file to open with for read access, which is allowed.
Vegas wants to open the file with RW acces (for what reason I don’t know), which is here denied.
How a program tries to open a file (R / W or RW access) is in it’s code, only developers can change it.
So your only option is to copy that file to another place (of course copy needs only read acces to source file)
and then you can open the copied file with Vegas.
