You can also turn that section into a compound clip and detach that way.

I agree with doing the media management outside of FCPX as much as possible. I think FCPX has some wonderful tools, but as it is still prone to crashes – I have had to much media corrupted by FCPX closing during an ingest/transcode/render operation – that I’d rather do my basic file management in the Finder.

Some media, such as that from P2 (panasonic cameras) need to retain their folder structure to be recognized by FCPX. If you can play back individual files from the finder or in quicktime, then the folder structure isn’t necessary.
My guess is at the root of your hard drive, you have a folder called DCIM or something that makes FCPX think your hard drive is from a camera and not just a hard drive. Deleting or moving that folder out of the root of the hard drive will fix that.
Please post back with screenshots of your finder window or any more info and I can help you more specifically.

That date comes from the file creation date which was set by the camera. So the person never set the camera time correctly.
I suppose you could change the metadata a few ways, but I wonder if the specific problem you’re having is because FCPX defaults to grouping clips by date making an event a mess if you don’t have the correct date?
If so, that can be turned off by clicking the gear in the lower left of the event window, finding “Group Events by date” and selecting “Don’t group events by date.”
While you’re there you might like to go down to “Group Events By” and selecting none.
I hate that these are defaults because it can make really small events look like a mess right off the bat.

Logical reasons to use the finder instead of FCPX:
1) FCPX is broken due to any reason that it breaks, so you want a clean start.
2) You’ve overloaded your computer with too many events and FCPX is SLOOOOOOOW.
3) You just don’t want to open FCPX because you don’t want it to take all of your connected hard drives and not allow you to eject them during a lengthy move process (I usually have 2-4 external hard drives attached to my desktop).
4) You’re work on 2 computers in 2 locations and use drop box to transfer just the event file and project file.I’ve been manually moving my projects around since 10.0.0 – no corruption yet.

I’ve seen similar weirdness before due to corrupted render files. I’d recommend throwing away all render files for the project and event, that should do the trick.

Oh man, I hate playing from the skimmer. I just remapped space to play from play head and option-space to play/pause. Thanks for the tip!
