Many many films these days are produced on DVD in true widescreen. Never had a problem with playing any of them (it’s been my prefered format for years).
I’ve also yet to have a problem in producing a true widescreen DVD project. Have you actually experienced a problem with this? How about just for the heck of it rendering it widescreen all the way… and see what that looks like.

*.dar is the actual DVDA project file…. when you render from Vegas it would not have generated a *.dar file… a *.mpg file maybe. Explain what/how you rendered for DVDA?

June 18, 2005 at 5:18 am in reply to: I have letterbox footage – what setting should I use in Vegas? If I’m not mistaken the letterbox mode in the DVX100A merely masks the top/bottom of the frame to produce a widescreen looking image. The result is the frames that are captured are 4:3 ratio but with embedded black bars top and bottom.
Now… you want to be able to display just the “video” part of the frame (minus the top/bottom bars) on your widescreen display.
The only way you can do that is to set your project properties to widescreen – and to physically crop the media to widescreen format. There will be a quality hit to doing this… but then I would imagine that will be acceptable as you decided to lose the resolution in the first place by choosing the letterbox mode in the DVX100A.
When you render for DVDA you will of course need to choose the DVDA NTSC WIDESCREEN format – and also choose the same widescreen setting in the DVDA Project Properties.

That decision will be affected by how much of the timeline will need to be rendered. If you have only added FX’s to a small section of the timeline then doing a PTT from the timeline will be just fine. However if the entire timeline (or nearly all of it) will need to be rendered then I would recommend you render anyway. Then either load THAT avi back into the timeline and PTT from there – or use the Vidcap utility to do the PTT instead.
Having this seperate rendered AVI will allow you to have more flexibility to fix any little things that you need to work on after doing your first PTT. Load that AVI back into the original project on tracks above the existing tracks. Mute the audio track (or delete it) as the audio will still be there from the tracks below.
Now – if you notice you had a typo on some text – or that you need to modify the timings/duration of a transition you can do that now by “slicing” away the small sections of your rendered AVI to expose the underlying original media/events. Now make your changes. Now you can do a PTT and only those sections of the timeline that have been “sliced away” will actually require rendering.
I use this workflow frequently and it saves a lot of time.

The LTD versions cannot be used as a plug-in – you can only use them in their stand-alone versions (using the Boris Keyframer) – at least that is the way it worked in V5. I have the full versions anyway… and these do work as plugins (although not as tightly integrated as I would like)

Previewing from unmodified DV source footage should come through at full frame-rate.
Anything else such as non DV source or video with any FX applied will preview at lower frame-rate that is dependant on many factors.Tell us a little more about what you are previewing.

I’m actually using it as my primary display… the extra real estate of the 24″ widescreen was too much of a temptation. It just didn’t seem right to have my 17″ LCD as primary and my 24″ as secondary. No doubt I could have moved all the Vegas windows around and re-position them to have the widescreen as the secondary… but I decided against that. I have not yet started on my HD editing in earnest. As soon as I get more into that I may re-configure as I will then definitely be using the widescreen as a full-screen preview of HD within V6. Either that…. or I’ll buy another 24″ 🙂
I did have to replace my old video card in order to support the 1920×1200 resolution. I suspect most of the newer cards will support that resolution… but I specifically went looking for the resolutions listed on the packaging.

Glad I could help. I’m just “paying it forward”. 99.99% of what I post is simply something I learned from someone else anyway.

[Jeffrey F. Krepner] “Just out of curiosity, Are you using a LCD 24″ HD?”
Yes…. I have a DELL 24″ 1920×1200

No…. you cannot preview to an FX1/Z1U direct from the timeline. V6 did introduce a way for us to preview full-screen onto a second monitor. So if (for instance) you have a 24″ widescreen HD monitor (like I have) you can preview all the pixels to that screen.
