Render to avi before print to tape?
Posted by Story Catcher on June 11, 2005 at 7:58 pmHello
What would be the best way to print to tape? I’ve read some earlier posts about choppiness etc. I have a 15 minute video with some effects & crops so would it be best to render it to an AVI first then import it back into vegas and print to tape that way?
Thanks

June 11, 2005 at 11:29 pmGo ahead and ptint-to-tape. You don’t really need to render to AVI first. At least I never have. Only time I would render to AVI first is if I needed to keep the video for some future use. Then I store it on an external drive.
With only a 15 minute video, you’ll know quite fast if it came out okay.

June 12, 2005 at 12:59 amThat decision will be affected by how much of the timeline will need to be rendered. If you have only added FX’s to a small section of the timeline then doing a PTT from the timeline will be just fine. However if the entire timeline (or nearly all of it) will need to be rendered then I would recommend you render anyway. Then either load THAT avi back into the timeline and PTT from there – or use the Vidcap utility to do the PTT instead.
Having this seperate rendered AVI will allow you to have more flexibility to fix any little things that you need to work on after doing your first PTT. Load that AVI back into the original project on tracks above the existing tracks. Mute the audio track (or delete it) as the audio will still be there from the tracks below.
Now – if you notice you had a typo on some text – or that you need to modify the timings/duration of a transition you can do that now by “slicing” away the small sections of your rendered AVI to expose the underlying original media/events. Now make your changes. Now you can do a PTT and only those sections of the timeline that have been “sliced away” will actually require rendering.
I use this workflow frequently and it saves a lot of time.

June 13, 2005 at 3:05 amSounds like a good plan! Thanks.
I actually accidentially deleted some picture files from my project. So I tried taking the MPEG I had rendered and slicing just after and before the fades from the picture section, then used the control key to slightly stretch that section out.
I know it was an MPEG but since it was simply pictures with a slight slow crop in I figured it would work ok. Then I rendered to AVI and tried printing to tape.
It didn’t like the streatched MPEG files and caused digital break up in those sections. 🙁
At least I know how to get it to tape now after I get those pictures again.
Thanks folks.

June 16, 2005 at 2:19 amI always render to a new track before PTT. It gives me a single file for archiving and it guarantees that I won’t have a problem rendering at PTT time.
