Premiere: “we’ll handle anything you throw at us natively.”
I wish that were true in my workstation, but PPCS6 crashes when I try to work with effects. My machine isn’t old, in fact it’s got some guts and then some, but something’s amiss. PP was fun while it lasted, but FCPX is more reliable on my rig.
Hence, I was heartfelt on buying the GH3 but I’ll wait until NAB season and maybe get the BMCC that shoots ProRes (or raw), so no transcoding in FCPX. I don’t know what’s goin’ on with PP on my workstation, but I don’t want to dissect everything to figure out why a fussy Adobe app constantly bombs on me. just move on…..

December 10, 2012 at 8:39 pm in reply to: OT: Apple CEO Tim Cook moves out of Steve Jobs’ shadowI had little interest in Apple politics until I read Adam Lashinsky’s muckraking book Inside Apple, which happened to be at the library (meaning I might not read it after all). But the book was smoothly written and Lashinsky’s insight was admirable. Content is probably a year old already, but Lashinsky predicted some executive dirt and he was right on the money, implicating Forstall.
Hence, the Chicago Tribune (LA Times) story is a good overview. Cook was very smart to not make immediate changes when he took the helm, but now he’s taking charge and he seems to be pretty good. A Fortune (https://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/12/08/apple-mac-pro-made-in-us/) writer surmises the Mac Pro will be US-built. That a new Mac Pro is even being considered is a step forward.
I don’t need a new Mac at the moment or foreseeable future, although the new max’d out iMac seems stellar for FCPX or PPCS6, but it’s probably worth waiting for a Mac Pro option.

Whether or not Propellerhead executes potential mutineers might not affect users that much, but obviously the Swedes have different methods of reporting their company’s stats. It seems to be a stable company vis-a-vis Avid and the Logic department of Apple.
Anyway, Reason 6.5’s time-stretch algorithm is killer for video, but I knew back in the Record days that Propellerhead’s time-stretch was tops, and I’ve compared this to Pro Tools and Logic. No need to search for perfect fitting music when Reason can stretch it to a certain extent and still sound good.
If Reason ever takes on video that would be stellar, but probably won’t happen.

“New Features Coming Later This Year” isn’t Apple’s forte. Perhaps Avid learned from Apple – Avid’s not at AES this year, in their own backyard. There aren’t even any rumors about Pro Tools 11 and PT10 is still not officially qualified for Mountain Lion. (I recently received spam from Avid and MtnLion was not listed as PT10-compatible). Hence, I didn’t upgrade my X2Pro, which should port to Logic but evidently there’s a technical snafu in that pursuit.

I read many audio magazines, EM, SOS, and all the British ones with DVDs that have software and samples. Used to be Logic was second after Pro Tools because of its MIDI capabilities. A lot of big names (Moby, Chem Bros, etc) used or use Logic, but those things change and many returned to Pro Tools after Avid fixed up MIDI.
It’s somewhat hard to speculate how Apple can possibly dumb down Logic, but FCPX is a fine example. Although FCPX is building up elements initially dropped for the rewrite, perhaps a similar scenario will transpire with LPX. If indeed Apple is trying to integrate FCPX with LPX maybe in a different way than STP did, then it seems to me LPX will need a rewrite from the ground up.
I think FCPX/LPX integration is the best route Apple could take. Avid has some MC/PT integration with their high end system, but if Apple can do it with FCPX and Logic, which would still have Rewire, and run on laptops, that would fill a void. Notice Adobe Audition dropped Rewire from CS6 but added better integration with Premiere Pro. If Logic drops Rewire, I won’t be the only one to drop Logic.

Some users will obviously be upset with LPX, especially electonica musicians who are hoping for an upgrade, not a dumb down. Perhaps the most to benefit will be FCPX users if LPX is integrated.
I use X2Pro with FCPX and waiting for Pro Tools 11. Premiere Pro CS6 seems to have OK audio with its mixer. But serious tricks such as tempo, pitch, and time change, and MIDI and Rewire probably needs a dedication audio sequencer. If FCPX/LPX integration could do that, and FCPX trims reflected in LPX, it would be enticing, but that could be too much to ask.

The fluffy PR piece doesn’t say AP switched from another NLE. The way it reads, AP is virgin in video and selected Premiere Pro. “Recently, AP invested in its video business….” Perhaps AP is switching from typewriter to 21st century technology.

Mr. Solorio was at SF Cutters last night (5 sept 12), showed the video, and talked about specific frames. Although he claims he’s independent from BM, of course he won’t offend the company/product since he’s been spoon-fed the camera. Nevertheless, it is a fine device, albeit a prototype that seems would be superseded by an upgrade, given the numerous concerns people have, e.g., crop, power, audio, AF (lack of), iris, etc. The rep said it’s “automatic iris control.”
There’s a barrage of unanswered questions about this camera, and the reps were vague on many aspects. The one concrete thing, according to the rep, is that production has slowed and this item will not be available to the public anytime soon. No estimate given….maybe don’t expect an Xmas gift?
The emphasis is visual dynamic range. This beast shoots in the dark with ambient light and shows everything! Mr. Solorio said the “sweet” range is ASA 800. That is a hefty ASA and he said most footage of that cheesy video was shot with a low-cost and slow Sigma 8-16mm consumer lens. You can shoot this camera with just a lens, or put the whole caboodle on it.
I think the reps didn’t say anything that can’t be read in the manual. Kind of useless that they even showed up, but at least techies were able to drool.

I think FCPX is innovative, but people can’t or don’t like to give up the old stuff, even the youngest of young editors. They love that FCP7/Premiere legacy workflow. I started using PPCS6 and although it’s oldskool I like it. I almost dumped FCPX but I need a magnetic timeline for some projects. Ultimately I’ll use both, old and new.
