OK, so if it’s goodbye to AD and no OMF, and if Apple truly wants to ‘think outside the box,’ my totally insane scenario goes like this:

OMF is an old concept and isn’t exactly easy to go back-and-forth between an NLE and Pro Tools. Today I was thinking that in the near future post-sound people might not need to work in Pro Tools. I’m excited about today’s release of Propellerhead Reason 6, which finally has an audio function by incorporating its two-year-old product Record.

Many scores are made with MIDI. If FCPX and Reason got together and developed a futuristic parameter to sync the two apps, we’d get video sound, audio recording, and MIDI in one rig with time-stretching, pitch-shifting, and all that other good stuff. Maybe it can be down with Rewire. I’d like to see this crazy collaboration.

Editing-on-the-go is appropriate or inappropriate, depending on person. For me, opens up a lot of ideas.

“Newbies,” “hobbyists,” and “YouTubers” are gonna run with FCPX and make some stellar flicks with this “walled garden” application, perhaps even start production companies specializing in FCPX. In fact, now there’s a forum right here on Cow entitled “FINAL CUT PRO X TECHNIQUES.”

People are already using it for their creations while veterans are griping. Hey, get to work, boys! The newbies are coming!

The target audience for FCPX are those who were kids or non-shooters when Apple first acquired FCP. A lot has changed since then and these noobs are now HD shooters who want to edit and post on the web. They don’t need all those pro features, so pros should move onto Avid or Adobe.

Avid screwed up too because their competitive upgrade sale for MC5.5 ended four days before FCPX was released. Imagine how many people would have taken advantage of that sale if it was still available June 21st. So many business mistakes!

I’m a production soundman so I don’t have loyalty to any NLE, but I get occasional post-gigs that I like to do in Pro Tools. Therefore I’m not a good candidate for FCPX and I didn’t plan to buy it right away anyway. Obviously I won’t be getting any post-gigs from FCPX users, especially noobs who don’t need advanced sonics processing.

I surmise that FCPX upgrades might become more complex when Lion’s released and that Apple might re-think its position on abandoning pros amid all the criticism.

Again I’m not loyal but can empathize with the pain that pro editors feel. It’s not easy to switch because of the learning curve and the downtime. But now seems appropriate to get the ball rolling.
