Looking at Avid’s website, no Pro Tools version or Avid/M-Audio interface is officially qualified for OSX8. Some users on the Avid forum say all is well, but most have issues. I get pops, so can’t really use Pro Tools at the moment. Kudos to those who have success.

No Pro Tools. Avid is consistently late to the OS party. Very uncool.
Meanwhile, using PPCS6/LogicPro9 for audio stuff. ‘Get back to FCPX/PT when Avid decides to jump onboard.

Perhaps Red Giant is more ubiquitous than Singular Software and thus should have better distribution and maybe package deals that can push the price down on Plural Eyes. Meanwhile, this could be incentive for Apple to further develop FCPX’s syncing protocols because it is easily stymied by multiple video and audio clips.
For example, all my recent music shooting with two cameras and constant Zoom audio placed clips all over the wrong places on the FCPX timeline after “syncing.” I ended up syncing manually. Fortunately beforehand I assured the cameras and Zoom all had the same time-of-day clocked, and that helped immensely, in fact it was fairly simple. All that to save $149 from buying Plural Eyes. Well, I guess I’m a cheapskate. If PE could sync a lot of data accurately it’s probably worth it.

Apple would really have to pump up Logic Pro X to get anybody excited about it. I think it would have to be fully integrated with FCPX, but that probably won’t happen. Logic Pro X is destined for a dumb down. Pro Tools will soon go to 11, with RTAS out-the-door, AAX in, 64 bit, offline bounce, and probably a lot of other stuff. 11 will quell all the other sequencer wannabees. Pro Tools and Reason are my audio apps of choice. I tried a bunch of other stuff, and retired them all. Logic is still on my plate but not for long.

I feel your pain. X2Pro only works with three specific versions of Pro Tools: 8 with Digitranslator, 9 (full product), and 10. That leaves the other 101 audio sequencers out of the picture, including crucial apps such as Logic, Cubase, DP, Nuendo, Sonar, etc. OMF was essentially universal, AAF not so much so, and X2Pro extremely niche.
There’s nothing that can be done. Third parties and hackers apparently aren’t interested in this aspect of video post-production. X2Pro is all we have. Red Giant just bought Singular Software (Plural Eyes) so who knows where audio is going. Rumors say Logic X is supposed to integrate more with FCPX but that’s hearsay and it might not be that good after all.

The new features announcement seem to mirror what’s been on the Apple website for weeks. Apple has to stop being secretive, vague, and non-committal. That’s old skool.

The “multichannel audio editing” that Apple is teasing about on their website. What’s the deal, and will that require Mountain Lion?

Mostly I read that boot times are faster with SSD. Does SSD do more than boot faster? Will it speed up video rendering? Booting up fast isn’t a big deal to me. Maybe it’s real important to other people.

With FCPX, which seems to have fairly low system requirements, maybe three years. I think other NLEs, motion graphics, and especially games won’t cut it that long.

Soldering RAM means you’ll buy a MBP now and again when 16gb is paltry. Furthermore 1gb VRAM today is paltry. How can future Retinas and FCPX not demand more VRAM to progress? Today’s MBP is an expensive short-term investment.
