Thanks. Yes, I was wondering about RAIDing drives internally. My concern about that is heat. Have others done that successfully, without heat issues?

One other question: I’m fine with installing components; I just hadn’t checked yet on whether I could buy drives from other vendors that fit properly in that space. But I guess the dimensions specs for such internal drives pretty standard, right?

Thats for taking the time with my “very small configuration question.”

Thanks, Arnie. Sounds like good advice on the HD10AVA. I will stick with my plans for the Kona, though, since I want to be ready for uncompressed HD.

    Cheers,

I am about to buy a Kona 3 card for the Octocore-based HD edit system I am configuring. But in order to be able to capture Beta-SP material from my UVW 1800, I must also buy the Io LA, right? And I take it that will also give me machine control of the 1800 through FCP?

I understand that we live in a digital world — and moreso every day. But I can say from experience that there’s still a heck of a lot of work out there that requires analog capability and I think there will be for some time to come. I wish AJA would build a Kona 3+ card that also provides analog capture, instead of requiring additional, outboard hardware. Anyone here know of any plans for that?

    Thanks for the info, guys.

No, $120 isn’t a lot but I’m putting an entire system together and if I’m careful about choosing each vendor wisely the savings can be significant.

I had never heard of transintl before. Is that a proven good vendor for memory?

    Thanks again.

October 14, 2007 at 7:47 pm in reply to: Chroma keying

I have not tried to do any chroma keying in FCP but I’m building a new MacPro-based system and considering whether to build in a new approach to keying. I currently do all my chroma keying in After Effects using KeyLight and I think it is an absolutely wonderful tool; I’d recommend it to anyone.

That being said, if I can get equal — truly equal — results by staying inside FCP and using, perhaps, the Conduit product I’d happily do that. Does anyone here have experience in both? I’d really be interested to know if Conduit — or something else I could use inside FCP — does as clean a key as I can get with AE and KeyLight?

    Anyone?

September 2, 2007 at 5:44 pm in reply to: Can anyone get this file to open & export?

    Thanks for the advice gentlemen,

May I ask one more: John, what settings did you use in the Wizard to get a playable mov output? I have been experimenting on Mac and PC to no avail. I feel like an idiot because I can normally get this stuff done just fine, but nothing is working for me. Would you mind giving me a step-by-step of your choices in doing this transcoding? Much appreciated.

JR…I have that plugin, too, but it’s not working for me (like everything else today). Were you able to export the file or just play it? I need to get it into a form that I can import to FCP. Thanks.

    Hi Tom,

The icon is a normal Quicktime icon. No joy with Perian, either. I think I have some corruption at play here. I’ll do my best to get the original files.

    Thanks.

I tried to use Compressor but the process failed. I have emailed the people who supplied these files in hoping to get something else from them. If you have any further guidance, it will be much appreciated.

I’ll try that. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sticking with me. Does this seem as strange to you as it does to me?

    Hi Jeremy,

The Quicktimes were sent to me as full frame h.264 files. Those play fine and completely on Quicktime Player. When I import them to FCP they play fine — up to a point. At which point they stop and the progress bar at the bottom of the preview window reaches its end. Anything I do to these files other than play them natively makes shorter files than the originals: I exported them from Quicktime as different Quicktimes and they stop at that same point in playback. So I tried importing one of the the ORIGINAL files into After Effects and when I lay it out on the timeline it, likewise, is only a partial movie — ending at exactly the same place! And this is the original file that plays fine and completely in Quicktime. I just cannot figure this one out.

    Looking for any ideas…

    Lee
