  • Can anyone get this file to open & export?

Posted by Lee Mceachern on September 2, 2007 at 3:11 am

    Hi,
A guy in the UK has sent me some video files shot with his cell phone camera. I want to get them into FCP but I’m having no luck. They are mp4 files but I can’t get Quicktime (the latest update) to open them. If anyone cares to give it a shot, here is where one of them is posted:

    https://ixulai.co.uk/VIDEO_012.mp4

BTW, the video information for this file has been reported as:
    Stream 0 (Audio)
    Codec: samr
    Channels: 1
    BPS: 16
    Sample rate: 8000Hz
    Bitrate: 128kb/s

    Stream 1 (Video)
    Codec: mp4v
    Resolution: 320×240
    Framerate: 15.151515

Thanks for any help. I really need to get these files open.

It will open and play in VLC but nothing else.

When trying to open it in quicktime it says “An invalid sample description was found in the movie.”

That leads me tho think that there is some corruption in it. streamclip wont even read it.

I got it to work, first opening with VLC Player then converting to MOV using its Streaming/Transcoding Wizard.

Do you want me to send you the file or do you want to try it yourself? VLC is a free dowload…just Google it.

You will need to convert it again to something FCP can edit with, but at least you will be able to open it in Quicktime Player.

    Thanks for the advice gentlemen,

May I ask one more: John, what settings did you use in the Wizard to get a playable mov output? I have been experimenting on Mac and PC to no avail. I feel like an idiot because I can normally get this stuff done just fine, but nothing is working for me. Would you mind giving me a step-by-step of your choices in doing this transcoding? Much appreciated.

JR…I have that plugin, too, but it’s not working for me (like everything else today). Were you able to export the file or just play it? I need to get it into a form that I can import to FCP. Thanks.

    Well, this is odd.
I have uninstalled Perian, downloaded a fresh copy of your file and QuickTime player 7.1.6 still opens it.
Info says it’s using Appple MPEG4 Decompressor.

    Oops, spelling error of course.
    Two “p”s is enough.
    “Apple MPEG4 Decompressor”.

Not to confuse the workflow but I also got it to export just fine from “MPEG Streamclip”.

    Great app {and it’s free}…..

Many choices as to how you want the export.

Like the man said, the VLC media player opens it fine.
