I concur you definitely need a TBC. VHS and any other analog tape formats have inherent time base instability. The Black Magic card probably has no time base correction, expecting a time base corrected signal at the input. Dubbing to Beta without a TBC doesn’t fix the problem because you’re only recording the errors to the Beta tape. A couple of years ago I bought a used time base corrector off Ebay from a reputable broker for about $100. Be sure to get one that has Frame Synchronization capability and does not expect a sync signal from the deck.

Here’s how to do it. Select the clip. Go up to the Modify menu and uncheck Stereo Pair. Go back to the timeline and click anywhere above or below the tracks to unselect the clip. Hold down the option key and select the empty track. Delete that track. Select the other track. Go to the Modify Menu, Audio, Pan center (control + .) You can also open the clip in the viewer, go t the audio tab and pan it to center.

You may get improved support for applications that use the card’s GPU Graphics Processing Unit) for real time or near real time playback. This includes Motion and FX Plugs in FCP and I assume some 3D modeling and animation programs. I don’t know if you’ll get $2,000 worth of improvement over the stock Radeon 2600 (a card that Walter has said he’s quite happy using) or the $150 Nvidia 8800 GT upgrade (that I just purchased with my new MacPro).

Perhaps it doesn’t like your stripped tape. Try an assemble edit instead. I usually leave :30 black between bars and the start of program. I stripe the start of the tape at 58:50:00 and record black to 59:40:00. Then I mark in the timeline and assemble edit at 59:30:00. That way the assemble edit is :30 before program start. May or may not make a difference, but worth a try.

Could this have something to do with the machine being an “early model?” When I get my new Mac Pro and get Final Cut installed I’ll let you know how it works.

Is this the same card that the apple store sells as an option when configuring a Mac Pro? It’s listed as NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI). I just ordered a Mac Pro from Mac Mall with that very card.Lee Berger

and for Motion, Photoshop, Soundtrack Pro or any other applications you may want to run concurrently with FCP. I run 4Gb on my Dual 2.0 G-5 with no problems.
