FX4500 – is it worth getting?
I’m looking to upgrade from my Quad G5 and have been offered a very good price (VERY GOOD!!) and legitimate too, on an 8core 3.0ghz Macpro with a FX4500 graphics card.
My question is this…assuming i make Commercials, and i use a lot of After Efects, some Shake and a lot of FCP (working at 10bit Uncompressed PAL) with a Kona 3 video card – is the FX4500 a good graphic card?
and will my waiting around for renders to complete be improved any?

The graphics card does nothing for FCP renders.

You may get improved support for applications that use the card’s GPU Graphics Processing Unit) for real time or near real time playback. This includes Motion and FX Plugs in FCP and I assume some 3D modeling and animation programs. I don’t know if you’ll get $2,000 worth of improvement over the stock Radeon 2600 (a card that Walter has said he’s quite happy using) or the $150 Nvidia 8800 GT upgrade (that I just purchased with my new MacPro).

The FX4500 (as well as the newer FX5600) are good graphics cards, but for FCS these cards don’t do anything special. The cards have some 3D capabilities that are complete ignored by FCS.
Currently the top of the line and fastest graphics cards for FCS are the ATI X1900 and the GeForce 8800 GT. And the best part about this is: These card are way cheaper.

like i said – its a very good offer and it actually works out cheaper than the cards you mentioned!! I just need to convince the boss before they all sell .
I forgot to ask – would Color and After Effects make good use of this graphics card?
