I had no idea. How would you find out if the NVidia GEForce 8800 card is not a Quartz Extreme graphics card? After suffering thru this, (and getting the error message that I could not run FCP because I did not have a supported Quartz Extreme graphics card in the error message upon launch), I went to “About this MAC, more info, clicked on Graphics cards, and sure enough, for the NVidia GEForce 8800, it said next to “Quartz Extreme” – NOT SUPPORTED.

So I had to shove in an ATI HD Radeon 2600, which is usually the default card anyway (this ATI card had a failure with “lines” in it, so the NVidia 8800 was the only card in stock at the Apple store).

WHO KNEW. Before posting this, I did a search on the Apple site under Final Cut Studio, and tech specs, and see nothing that says “don’t use the Nvidia GEForce 8800”. It just says “Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors. ”

    What a day.

    Bob,
Is this the same card that the apple store sells as an option when configuring a Mac Pro? It’s listed as NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI). I just ordered a Mac Pro from Mac Mall with that very card.

I am being told by “a higher authority” that it should absolutely work. I am just relating my experience. I am running OS-X 10.5.4 on an “early” MAC Pro. The original ATI card developed a “streaking” problem (probably due to defective memory chips on the ATI card), and the NVidia was the replacement from the Apple store. To my dismay, although the computer certainly boots up, and you see a display, when you attempt to launch FCP, you get the “this card does not support Quartz Extreme”, and will not launch. Not knowing what this was, I eventually looked at the MAC>More Information>Graphics Cards info, and sure enough, it listed the NVidia 8800 under the “Quartz Extreme” catagory as not supported.

Like I said, I am told that this should NOT be the case with this card, but it’s not like there is a DOWNLOAD for this driver on either the Apple site OR the NVidia site (they say it’s native to the MAC OS). So what am I to do. I COULD waste another day reloading the entire OS on this MAC just to see what would happen, but when you pop in the “defective” ATI card, FCP launches with no error messages about the graphics card and runs just fine (with the occational streaky lines).

It would be wonderful if I could just go SOMEWHERE and download the MAC OS-X driver for this NVidia card, but it apparantly does not exist.

Could this have something to do with the machine being an “early model?” When I get my new Mac Pro and get Final Cut installed I’ll let you know how it works.

I can only add here that I have an ATI Radeon 2600 running fine in a Mac Pro Octo Core. I pulled the nVidia 8800 out of the machine to put the ATI in when I first bought it.

Here’s a report that says it’s an issue with the older models not supporting PCI-Express 2.0

The link also says NVIDIA was working on a upgrade kit, so maybe that’s now available.

Sounds like someone completely dropped the ball at Apple or nVidia on this one. Nice to have something so simple as a graphics card, an upgraded graphics card at that, cause a complete system failure.

Could be another example of the incredibly miniscule Apple FCP Beta Program biting the 1,000,000+ users in the butt. When you don’t have enough people testing the product on enough system configurations, you end up with an endless stream of issues that just should not have to happen.

    What about the late MacBookPro?
It uses a Geforce 8600, is that quartz-extreme?

How many monitors are you running? If one, then try it in the other port. I’ve had that error message and swapping fixed it.

    Hi Peter –
I don’t need a “workaround”. I am running one 23″ Apple Cinema display on an early MAC Pro. OS is current 10.5.4.
There is NO PROBLEM with the ATI card, but there IS a problem with the NVidia card (only with FCP launching – the card works fine).

NO ONE should ever do a “workaround” if these products should work.
If this is a driver issue, it should be readily available on either the Apple or NVidia site. If it’s native to the OS, well – I have OS-X 10.5.4 loaded on this computer. The System Profiler specifically says that Quartz Extreme is NOT supported for this card. If this is incorrect, and it’s simply a driver issue, it would be nice to have access to the correct driver, from at least NVidia on their site.

Probably obvious and I shouldn’t even post this, but… Is this with a Kona 3 card? Are you using the 5.1 ND drivers? If it is the 6.0 driver, did you uncheck Desktop display? I know from the past this would make the x1900 in my 8-cores show up as not Quartz Extreme supported.
