That’s interesting. I recently upgraded to a Mac Pro, however I was able to capture native HDV via FireWire from my V1U (as well as a Canon H1) using my previous G-5 Dual 2.0. The only problem that still persists is intermittent and unexplained failures to find timecode during batch captures. In that case Capture Now works in a pinch.Also here’s another article from Andrew Balis on HDV to ProRes including some Easy Setups. https://www.moviola.com/hdv_prores The article states:
Unlike standard practice with Final Cut Pro, we do not choose a capture preset with the same frame rate as our footage. This is handled automatically by FCP, whether the footage is 60i, 30p or 24p, it will all get captured in the correct frame rate.
By the way when you shoot in the V1U’s 24PA mode and capture HDV to ProRes, pull down is automatically removed and you can work in a 23.98. I tested this and it works.

Are you connected to FCP via FireWire? If so then your input should be I-Link and not the analog inputs.If you’re using an analog I/O device then you have to have a signal going into the either the composite, S-Video, or Component inputs. If there is no signal the deck won’t go into record. If you simply want to stripe the tape with black and timecode you could use the deck’s internal Black Burst Generator. Menu>Setup Menu>Video>Video>SG>BB. Then press the Set(Yes) button and select SG from the front panel video input selector.

It’s the deck’s internal signal generator. It’s a front panel setting labeled Input Select. If you press the video button it toggles through composite, component, S-Video, and SG (Signal Generator). To the left of that is the SDI/Ilink (FireWire) toggle.

I had this same problem and I believe the solution was to be sure the font is available to all users, not just the home user (or maybe it was the other way around). Check your home folder’s library>fonts and also check HD>library>fonts to be sure the font is in both places.

The reason you are only getting :30 of your export is that you do not have the full version of the Flip 4 Mac WMV export component. In the free version you can play WMV files in Quicktime, but the export is limited to a :30 demo. Go here to purchase the full version
https://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htmAs for the unrendered portion of your export, try to force rendering the clip before you export by selecting the clip and going to Sequence > Render Selection. There choose the option that corresponds to the color in the timeline over your clip (eg bright green equals preview, etc.)

Try checking your FCP System Settings to see if the “Limit Capture to” check box is selected.

That’s a good question. I’ve only used these two cameras to capture, but I have received tapes from one additional model, Sony HVR-Z1U and the capture went fine. I would be willing to bet that it’s an HDV problem. Perhaps other forum users can respond.
