    I don’t understand what you mean by “it works while editing.” Do you mean that you can monitor while editing in the program, or that you can monitor while capturing media?

    If your deck needs a reference (As does the UVW1800 Betacam) then you can use the Io’s composite output as a reference. You can invest a few hundred dollars in a black burst generator, but if our deck doesn’t require a reference I wouldn’t spend the money.

    Sony=AJA: Y=Y/G, R-Y=Pr/R and B-Y=Pb/B

    The Ref connector on the Io is an input not an output so it won’t provide a reference for your VTR. You don’t need it anyway for the DSR45.

    Thanks Walter. In the ProRes codec, if you select interlace, you can choose upper or lower fd.

    After pondering my original issue, I began to suspect scaling.

    I did a test, encoding an SD file to ProRes. It retained its interlacing, showing inter field flicker when paused on an object in motion. I then encoded an HDV file to ProRes with no scaling and it too retained its interlacing.

    I assume that some field blending occurs during scaling.

    I believe that Shift Fields is only relevant if you place the HDV footage in an SD timeline. I’m exporting to a self contained HDV file and using Compressor to transcode and down convert to SD, Letterbox, ProRes 422. Once I have the downonverted ProRes file, I import it back into FCP and place it in a ProRes timeline. No need for deinterlacing or field shifting as ProRes is upper field dominant and has no effect on my analog component output to Betacam.

    I do this because I find the downconvert in the timeline to be very poor, resulting in a great deal of aliasing.

    Here is a workflow I came up with using the subclipping function (CMD+U).

    You might want to make a copy of your timeline and place it in a new bin. That way the subclips will land in that bin, making them easier to locate later.

    Find your first frame to export and Mark in and Out. Go to Modify > Make Subclilp (CMD+U). This will create a subclip with a single frame duration. Repeat for each still frame to export.

    Select all of the subclips (but not the original sequence) and go to File > Batch Export. Now use the setting function to select the type of file, and the destination folder. Be sure to check Use Item In/Out. JPEG didn’t seem to work, but PNG did. You can use an image editor to batch convert to the format of choice.

    The downside of this is that the exported file name will be something like Sequence Name Subclip 1, Sequence Name Subclip 2, etc. You can use batch renaming software to rename the images. Instead of subclips you could use the marker function and set the durration to 1 frame.

    Give it a test try. It can’t hurt anything. Capture a couple of clips, place them on a timeline and see how it works. Please let us know how it goes.

    I couldn’t agree more. From Apple’s website: “Mix and match a wide range of formats and even frame rates in the open format Timeline.” Yes of course you can do it, but you won’t be satisfied with the scaling quality.
