You want to use the Media Manager. It allows you to copy just the clips in your sequence into a new project. Once you verify the trimmed sequence you can delete the media from the original project. Here is a tutorial.

A word of caution, carefully examine the copied/trimmed sequence before you delete the original media. Sometimes using Media Manager can deliver unexpected results, such as missing media.

I agree with Shane. I’ve worked on several HDV projects and have had good success capturing and editing in native HDV. The editing was no problem on my previous G-5, and excellent on my current Mac Pro. I set the render to ProRes which speeds up renders and avoids re-compressing in HDV. You can find the Sequence Settings (CMD+0) under the Render Control Tab. In the Codec drop down choose Apple ProRes 422. Best of luck.

I agree. Buy inexpensive drives and backup to them. Other World Computing has an interesting appliance that looks like a toaster, allowing you to plug in bare Sata and Sata II drives. It comes in two models with different interface options.

If you’re using the GV-HD 700 as an analog to digital converter then I would check the GV-HD 700’s audio settings. It may be set to 32kHz and that would cause your sync problem. Even though you’re using the 48kHz capture setting, you may be feeding 23kHz audio.

My Panasonic DMR-ES35V DVD/VHS combo has the option of starting with the first video or starting with the menu. I believe it is an option in the Finalize menu. I imagine that other DVD Video Recorders might have this option as well. There are a few on E-Bay.

One thing I forgot to add is that if you are shooting DV or DVCam and capturing to DV/DVCPro codec it would be better to use the FireWire connection instead of analog component. This avoids a decode to analog and encode back to digital. If you are capturing to a higher quality codec such as DVCPro 50 or ProRes 422 then you need to use the Io.
You can capture directly to ProRes 422 via FireWire, but you cannot use the Batch or Capture Clip functions. You have to Capture Now. Here’s a link on how to do it.

I think I see the issue now. You’re trying to verify playback from the deck on you 21-inch monitor using the Io. The Io is connected directly to the monitor via the S-Video output. The deck’s component output is connected to the Io.
If this is the case you won’t see the deck’s playback output. The Io will only show the output of Final Cut. There are three ways you can work around this.
1. Open the Log and Capture window and the decks output will be passed through to the monitor.
2. Exit FCP and run the AJA Io control panel application. This will pass the deck’s signal to the monitor.
3. Run a cable directly from the deck to another input on the monitor. This is the best option.If you only have one S-Video input on the monitor you can get an inexpensive consumer grade S-Video switcher to switch between the Io and your deck. Having said that, composite out of your deck should be more than good enough to check the tape.
