  • FCP Capture Settings with Sony V1U 24p(A)

Hi. I have about 70 hours of HDV footage shot using the Sony HVR-V1U Camera at 24p (Advanced) mode. What are the best settings for capturing and editing the footage in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 at the highest possible quality?

Thanks in advance for your help!

First, the 24p on that camera is recorded at 29.97, so 1080i 60 is the proper setting, however, whether you capture as HDV or ProRes depends on your computer. My G5 will not capture as native HDV from that camera, it will only capture ProRes via firewire. To do that check out Chris Poisson’s tutorial on how to do that at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php.

[David Roth Weiss] “My G5 will not capture as native HDV from that camera, it will only capture ProRes via firewire.”

    David:
That’s interesting. I recently upgraded to a Mac Pro, however I was able to capture native HDV via FireWire from my V1U (as well as a Canon H1) using my previous G-5 Dual 2.0. The only problem that still persists is intermittent and unexplained failures to find timecode during batch captures. In that case Capture Now works in a pinch.

Also here’s another article from Andrew Balis on HDV to ProRes including some Easy Setups. https://www.moviola.com/hdv_prores The article states:

Unlike standard practice with Final Cut Pro, we do not choose a capture preset with the same frame rate as our footage. This is handled automatically by FCP, whether the footage is 60i, 30p or 24p, it will all get captured in the correct frame rate.

By the way when you shoot in the V1U’s 24PA mode and capture HDV to ProRes, pull down is automatically removed and you can work in a 23.98. I tested this and it works.

    Hey Lee!

Nice article by Andrew Balis… I’ll check it out in detail for sure. Thanks.

Don’t really know why I could not capture HDV native with the V1U, but believe me, I tried everything. Cost me many, many hours of effort…

In any case, I remembered that I’ve been using 30p with the V1U, which does get captured at 1080i60.

It is my understand that 24pA with this camera is different from 24pA in Panasonic cameras (which is 24p advanced). The 24pA of this Sony camera (which stands for 24p Scan A) assures that the beginning of the next clip starts on an ‘A’ frame and it assures the 3:2 pulldown will be seamless across the tape, that’s why FCP can remove the pulldown…. As if we need anymore fricking terminology confusion in NTSC.

Im kinda new to some of this but, I captured on my Z7u 1080i 24p using tape and it is not true 24p as stated above.
I captured the footage using 1080i60 HDV preset for capturing it all but, do I still need to remove the pull down some how in FCP6?

I have wondered why the 1080i 24p on tape doesnt look as rich and high quality as the 1080i 24p recorded on CF Cards.

Im trying to find the best preset in FCP that will give me the best quality with the smallest file size.
