You really never needed the BG-50 if you reference your 1800 to the Io or Kona’s composite output. If you take the BG-50 out and connect directly you will get the same results. If you still want a seperate source of reference I recommend that you trade in for the BSG-50. Then you can lock the Io/Kona and 1800 to a common reference.

Sorry, I was not being clear. I meant the Io or Kona’s composite out to the BG-50 input. Then connect one of the BG-50 outputs to the UVW-1800 Reference input (75 ohm switch in on position). There’s no need to change the 1800’s input to composite. Leave it set at Component and everything will work just fine. Lastly, I don’t see why B&H would not take the BG-50 in exchange for a BSG-50.

No bother. The BG-50 cannot work as a BB generator in any situation because it is not a generator, but a distributor. It requires a seperate BB generator such as the BSG-50.
So the issue is the same for Kona as Io. Neither have a reference out, but you can use the composite out.

Calling it a “Multiple Output Black Generator” is misleading. It’s really a Black Burst distributor. Can’t you return or exchange them? If not you can go back to earlier discussions of using the Io’s composite out as a reference source and the Horita unit as a DA. BTW Horita’s website says that “all HORITA products come with an unconditional 30-day money back guarantee.”Good Luck

One thing to consider as you jump into FCP is there is no resolution mixing within a project. Any media not captured at the project settings has to be rendered. That said as an Avid and Media 100 editor I find FCP quite professional and the Aja box is of excellent quality.

I read that as well, perhaps in a previous post from Aja.
Let me weigh in on the promised software issues as well. While I’m disappointed in the delays, I’m not disappointed in Aja’s product and tech support. I’ve e-mailed them with issues on three occasions and their response has always been swift and helpful.

There’s nothing wrong or unprofessional about using the composite output of the Io as a reference. All the UVW1800 needs is a reference and doesn’t require a black burst generator. This is not a production system with multiple sources that need to be timed together. It’s just Sony’s silly approach to this series of machines which require an external reference or you can’t record. PVW, BVU, DSR and BVW machines don’t require an external reference. I’ve been in remote situations where when recroding on UVW decks you have to loop the composite out of a camera or feed through the reference in order to record and it’s never been a problem.

Thanks for the heads up, but I wonder why it would be an issue. That’s the way I have my UVW-1800 configured with no problems. It should be a stable signal, especially now that they’ve implemented their frame sync hardware. I’ll ask Aja anyway and post their response.
