Run the composite out of the Io into the reference in of the Betacam (be sure to turn 75 ohm on). If you need the composite signal at the Betacam composite input you can loop through, just be sure not to terminate until the last connection.

With XServe RAID and Io you should have RT, even on uncompressed footage. You shouldn’t have to render clips. If you used one of the 8-bit uncompressed easy setups then you should not have to render on your timeline. Sometimes a timeline won’t match the capture setting. It took me a little time to get this straight.The easiest way to do this is to apply the easy setup again, and open a new sequence. That way your clips and timeline will match. With the XServe RAID you are supposed to get two streams (not layers) of uncompressed 10-bit video without rendering clips and simple effects like dissolves and keys. That’s the way it works for me.

Your numbers are similar to mine and I’m not experiencing any dropped frames. As noted in another post, do you have any other FireWire devices connected aside from Io? For backups I use a FireWire 400 drive connected to a FireWire 400/800 PCI card with no ill effects. Only the Io is connected to the built in FW port.
Have you talked to tech support at AJA? This forum is good, but I have found tech support at AJA to be very responsive.

Read the previous Post from the most excellent AJA Sales Department and the Kona Test application is much better then XBench.

I have the same configuration and have never dropped a frame. You should not be experiencing dropped frames. According to AJA’s data rate calculator 8-bit uncompressed is about 28 Mb/second. You Xserve should be able to sustain over 120 Mb/second. Double check under the FCP systems settings to be sure that the XServe is set as your scratch disk.

This has nothing to do with dropped frams, but your message says you captured as as composite 8-bit uncompressed. Did you really mean Component? If not you should be capturing component for best quality.
Defraging a mostly empty drive probably won’t help as there is plenty of space for contigious blocks. You could try repairing permissions, don’t know if it will help, but won’t hurt. Also try trashing your FCP preferences.
Try capturing at DVCPro50, to see if the problem occurs at a lower data rate.
Finally, try XBench which is a free at http://www.xbench.com.

What types of drives are you using and what Aja Io setting are you using to capture? If your drives are not fast enough and your setting is too high, say Uncompressed 8 or 10 bit, you could experience dropped frames. -

If you’re using Capture Now I would assume that you don’t have any way to control your VTR via RS-422. If so FCP is waiting to communicate with your VTR via RS-422 control and can’t. Simply open the Capture Tool and select the Capture Settings Tab, Select the Device Control drop down and select Non-Controllable Device. After you select capture now, you will need to press Play on your VTR.Lee
