What are you using to send black burst to the IO and UVW-1800?

I only have the uwv/1800 and the AJA IO LA, so really I Don]t know what to do to get a good genlock. I used once a video signal generator, but I don]t have it here with me. Do you have any ideia What can I use.

    Thanks.

Run the composite out of the Io into the reference in of the Betacam (be sure to turn 75 ohm on). If you need the composite signal at the Betacam composite input you can loop through, just be sure not to terminate until the last connection.

You might want to ask AJA about using video from the IO instead of a sync gen… I think it’s a no-no.

    Bob:
Thanks for the heads up, but I wonder why it would be an issue. That’s the way I have my UVW-1800 configured with no problems. It should be a stable signal, especially now that they’ve implemented their frame sync hardware. I’ll ask Aja anyway and post their response.

Here’s what Aja had to say, and mighty quickly I might add:

    Hello Lee

No reason what so ever.. just make sure to switch the Ref In to 75ohm ON

    Isaac –
in this case, don’t listen to anyone on this list, including Steve at AJA.
BUY A COLOR BLACK GENERATOR like a cheap Horita BSG-26N, or go on ebay, and get a used color black generator from ANY COMPANY. I have seen excellent old Grass Valley SCB100N sync generators go for under $100 recently on ebay.

Take the color black signal, and plug it into your Reference In on the AJA I/O, and the Ref Video Input on the Beta 1800, and you will have NO MORE PROBLEMS. Don’t try a short cut – do it right – be a professional.

There’s nothing wrong or unprofessional about using the composite output of the Io as a reference. All the UVW1800 needs is a reference and doesn’t require a black burst generator. This is not a production system with multiple sources that need to be timed together. It’s just Sony’s silly approach to this series of machines which require an external reference or you can’t record. PVW, BVU, DSR and BVW machines don’t require an external reference. I’ve been in remote situations where when recroding on UVW decks you have to loop the composite out of a camera or feed through the reference in order to record and it’s never been a problem.

If the issue is simply that, while outputting, you see a horizontal sync bar on screen, don’t sweat it. Check your recording after it is done. I’ll bet you a donut that the recording is perfectly fine.

For some friggin reason the Fisher Price UVW-1800 never displays a properly synced signal while recording, even from a house referenced source. I don’t know why this is, and I, in my hubris, honestly believe I have it configured correctly — with black burst reference input, and the proper termination and everything. It’s just the nature of that machine since day one. this has happened while outputting from Avid and hard recording from D-Beta in component and from composite sources as well, so I don’t think it has anything to do with Kona or FCP.

    Just go with it…
