I didn’t know that Panasonic didn’t create the DVCpro codec. Perhaps that is why I can’t find it and download it on their site. That thought never even came across my mind when I bought into the DVCpro way of doing things. I thought it was apart of the quicktime codec structure now for both platforms.
If you have to buy the codec to view these files if you don’t have an editing system then that is very lame. I would doubt PDF files would be a good way to distribute documents if you had to pay for the reader.
And to answer your question Mitch this happens often with me. A Director comes down from San Fran to Santa Barbara, hires a local videographer and takes the footage back with him. In every other case they have left with a DV or Beta SP tape. This tape then goes back with them to an editing house. In this case the original files went back in a Disc not a tape. The director wants to view the footage and make notes before he enters the studio. that is not such a far fetched idea.
I hope Jan sees this and can point me to a cross platform decompression codec.

I looked at the Matrox site and did’nt see anything. what I don’t usderstand is why would I find a decompression codec at a site like Matrox when I should be able to get it from the people who created it, Panasonic.
If it is come copy protection thing I would think they would at least create the decompression so people can view the footage and not encode in that format. Digital Anarchy has Microcosm codec. If you don;t buy it you can still use it to decompress and see the clip but you can’t encode with it.
I hope Jan reads this an can direct me to the Codec.

So it isn’t a part of QT then? Where can I downlod the software decompression codecs. I have a client that took 4 DVD Data discs back home to San Fransico with the QT clips on them converted right from the camera to FCP. He wants to view them on his PC to make notes. The decompression codec must be some where to download.

I’ll try it again. I thought I trued that way first like you said but I will try it again. Have you tried to output your stuff in 1080i or just 480i?

I can’t seem to get this to work. Is it because of HD mode? Do the camera setting have to be set to FCP etting for it to work right? I have the P2 card mounted on the computer but when I try to print to tape I get an error message saying that it is write protected even thought the card is not write protected?

Wow it is that simple going to 1080i as well, that is cool. I’ll give it a shot!

Ahhh, let me explain a little more. After I shoot I pop the P2 into the laptop and import into FCP. That takes care of the file format problem and I have QT movies in the Capture Scratch folder. I then drag that folder to Toast and burn them a disc with the QT.mov files on them.
I know if a PC has QT for windows that has the DVNTSC codec and people can look at footage shot on mini DV camera. I guess I am thinking that the DVCPRO codec is a part or dirivitive of that codec is because when I open up a clip in QT player it opens in a low rez version. I have to get info on it and click the high resolution to see it nice and clear. DVNTSC is the only codec that I am aware of that defaults to a low rez playback.
So, if a PC user has QT for windows can they see the DVCPRO 50 ro 100 movie without needing to download another codec.

If no adaptor comes to market to solve this problem, I wonder if Panasonic will make P2 Express Cards with a PCMCIA adaptor for for those cards to be used with the cameras?

If you do alot of this work then you might want to look into getting Microcosm. I use this to go between FCP and AE. It creates a file that is about 1/3 the size of animation codec and islossles that also handels 16 bit not just 8 bit like Animation codec.
