I use 2 backups. I have a 500 gig raid stripe 0 (2-250 gig drives). I then have retrospect launch at 4am in the morning and back up the raid to a 1 gig firewire drive. It only updates any new items. Finished projects go into a 160 gig partition on a 3rd drive. When that is full I write a tape backup using the VXA-320 firewire Data Tape back up system so they are archived.
I have used this method for 18 months now and at my work flow level I write a tape 1 time a month.

I just did that last month. I had my Laptop in Sweden and I had some P2 footage that they needed back in California. It was only about 4 gigs and I used Stuffit to compress down the file so I was only uploading 1 file. the one cool side effect of the new Stuffit is that it seems to be MXF aware. Once I compressed the file I expanded it to be sure it compressed ok. When I did a window popped up showing me a thumb nail of all the clips before it expanded, very cool.

I use the same adapter and it works fine for my macbook pro. The only thing that I don’t like is that I have to restart my computer if I pull the adapter out of the express port. I hope this is a bug that they will fix soon.

What cameras support this new codec? IS the HPX-170 one of them? SOunds like the codec that I want but would love to see it in a small camera. like the hvx200a and hpx170

Thanks Jan… My hopes are to have this taken care of before I get back from vacation. I will ask my friend to pick up the camera and take it to Panasonic in LA.
Can you give me an address or phone number to that location? I already pulled that Video Clinic off your list so I want to make sure I get the right place this time.
Thanks!

Yes my camera us 6500 miles away from me right now in LA and I am in Sweden. This was the only chance to get the camera repaired. The repair shop that the camera was dropped off at was on the list of Authorized repair places from the Panasonic site. I can not help if they list is incorrect.
I would have no problem paying for this but it will be replaced with a new improved part which means the current one should have been recalled in or out of warranty like parts on my car are recalled.
I am hopeful that this will be resolved with Jan’s help.

Wow… I thought they were authorized to work on the camera. I followed your instructions and went to the Panasonic website and followed the links to the service area. I tried to search by my camera model number typing in HVX-200 and a sub window pops up saying unable to locate a match.
The Sub window that pops up has more instructions and the title of the window says “Locate an Authorized Service Center”. Using the selected pull down menus if finds Professional Camera and then DVCPRO and enter my zip which is 93463. The Video Clinic Inc is at the top of the list and is located at 2307 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 90403. Their Phone number is 310-828-6464.
They are listed as Authorized Service Centers on your website. Is the Panasonic web site wrong some how???

July 9, 2008 at 9:00 pm in reply to: Archiving: LTO-3a vs. the cheaper spread: MXF important?I have a VXA-320 firewire tape drive. Cost was only $850 when I bought it last Christmas. Works just fine with Retrospect and I can restore just 1 file and not the whole tape drive. Backing up already compressed video footage I get 160 gigs per tape.
I love the drive and never had a problem with it. Plus it is fireiwre and you don;t have to install any 3rd party cards.
