We just bought the Canon XF 305 and with 4.2.2 color space, 50Mbs, and Canon L glass you can acquire amazing footage for an amazing price. Check the BBC decision about these cameras.

April 8, 2011 at 10:13 pm in reply to: Professional camera technique: changing a culture of over zoomingI intentionally posted here because I knew I would reach a more professional group of shooters and I received some very quotable material.
We aren’t shooting for the big screen and making features, but my predecessor allowed our shooter to zoom every shot because the boss seemed to demand it. I need to break the culture and needed some ammo.
I use zooms in certain instances with compound moves, but only when it is the best technique in the tool box.
Thanks everyone for the responses. It generated a lot of interest.
Thanks

That is what I wanted! An anti zoom soapbox preacher! Unnaturally distracting is a term I shall use.
My ultimate motive here is that we need a new smaller field camera. We have a JVC 250U which draws too much attention, especially when we go overseas.
I can’t send my shooter with a DSLR (I own a 5d markII) because he will need too much retraining and doesn’t have the background for it.
If I give up interchangeable lens functionality, I would consider the new line of Canons: 100,105,300, 305.
Since you use and like the XL-H1do you think these new cams would be as good? 50mbs, 4:2:2, canon glass sounds good….
Any ideas?

Thanks Bob,
I personally own a 5D mkII, and would use it except for two things. The boss insists on certain zoom shots
which are hard without a servo type zoom lens. We will be sending a video camera operator who was will be directed by the boss who wants those type of shots so I have a culture to change.I’ve looked at the Panasonic AG-AF100 which is my favorite so far, the Sony nexcams are just coming out, but perhaps not in time, and the new Canon 100,105,and 300 show promise. but use small chips so controlling depth of field is harder.
I really want a camera with interchangeable lenses so we can accumulate some great glass and keep it as bodies come and go.
What other cameras would you recommend?

Chris,
Yes a full render to 486 before going into Plural Eyes worked. If you look at my recent post, I found out compressor made the video go soft.
Not sure why.

OOPS!
After using compressor and the geometry pane the render went soft. It changed it to 486, though. When switching back and forth from the 486 created by the KiPro recorders to the newly rendered 486 ther was a size jump in the image. I don’t get that. I rendered to 422 without the geometry pane and the image stayed sharp.
I’m not sure what happened, but I’m back to square one.
Any ideas?
