Rather than scale I feel pretty certain that the parameter being animate is something like “Bulge.” Not in front of FCP right now to check the name but the center of the image is popping out more than at the sides. And there’s lots of overshoot.

Over the years I have seen this effect several times in raw newreel film I’ve been cutting. I call it a lens turret change. Before zooms, many types of motion picture cameras had 2, 3, 4 and even 5 lens turrets. Some could change while filming.
I wanted to send you an example but failed to find one through Google search.
So I went to the website of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum which has footage in which I specifically remember see lens turret changes. Sure enough I found one for you. It’s in sound film of the Nuremberg Trials where it can’t be cut out without losing a word or two from the sound track.

Since this comment is probably correct, it deserves more explaination.
If your Left and Right balanced audio cables are wired differently you will get one channel inverted in relation to the other so when you sum them they cancel out. If each channel by itself is OK but together they cancel, this is what’s happening. A phase invert switch on one channel of your mixer could be causing this too, so check that first.
As to checking the cables, Whether they are XLR to XLR cables; XLR to 1/4″ Tip/Ring/Sleave plugs or XLR to RCA phono plugs the internal wiring must match on the Left and Right cables. You can check with a continuity tester or sometimes you can open the connectors and check visually. Or just substitue a known good cable set.

Furthermore the nesting is a good solution when your title is multilayer, such as with a logo, a graphic backplate or additional type layers.

Darn good question, I too have been bewildered that people trying to be so precise can casually mix up frames per second and fields per second when things are confusing enough already! I asked the same question as you at an HD seminar and got a partially satisfying answer that progressive formats are described in frames per second while interlaced formats are (sometimes) described in fields per second. Personally I see no reason to use different yardsticks, but I’d like to hear what others have to say. Anyway thanks alot for asking this question.

I’ve got another question about searches:
How does one search for a two-word phase without getting occurrances of either of the words alone? In the FCP forum I searched for “capture now” in quotes and not in quotes and in both cases I got tons of hits but almost none included the two words together.

I went through 5 years of wrist and shoulder pain from bad editing ergonomics. But the last 10+ years have been much better with these helps:
I too learned to mouse left handed and switch frequently.
I keep the height of my keyboard/mouse surface LOW. For me about that’s about 22″ off the floor. When I was freelancing in rooms with higher editing desks I would bring a “Herman Miller scooter” so I always had a comfortable height.
I did a few years of accupuncture and massage therapy which both helped. I learned and do a morning stretch routine from a great book by Bob Anderson called “Stretching.” But the therapy that I strongly recommend anyone with back or shoulder tension look into, can be found by Googling “self massage tennis ball.” A massage therapist recommended it to me as a between appointment tune up. Not a great business move for her, because with it alone I’ve nipped in the bud every flare-up of back/shouder pain for the last ten years. If you like it and want to try something even better, Google “Theracane,” buy one for $35 and use it when you need to.

Re-read the original post. He said that events were time-of-day critical. To me that means that they need the time of day code unchanged. They either need to sync shots or judge a contestant’s performance against the clock or whatever.
If they could accept continuous code they could restripe TC on the tapes. Then they could keep the ability to redig.
FCP needs a decent, Avid-like “Digize Across TC breaks” function. There’s no work around for these guys.
