He mentioned Mercury playback but he asked if he would have to change graphics cards, which are both ATI. Wouldn’t he have to install nVidia cards for Mercury? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to get new graphics cards than a Red Rocket? Though I don’t think there would be any performance enhancement for FCP7…

You can keep your project files on the system drive. I keep a Vegas folder in My Documents and back it up regularly to other drive or flash drive.

I would try to get the GTX570 if you can afford it – so much more power. If not I would grab the i7 2600 cpu or newer for a few more dollars you’ll get a substantial horsepower boost and multi-threading.

Have you done an update to PPro since last edit? Since you don’t have an approved CUDA card you may have to apply the hack I’ve heard tell about to get real-time Mercury stuff going…

Cool – never tried it in FCP – though I’ve rarely used it but made great demo in MC.

I had to use the Sony software as a stand-alone to re-wrap XDCAM to QT’s and then import to FCPX. I think Sony will be showing FCPX compatible version at NAB in April.

Gotta love IT Depts. IT did the same thing on my last series but they had to give it back – we had to have Admin Priv in all edit bays – they hated that but had no choice since we kinda did need to deliver shows etc.

Vegas has a Media Manager where metadata can be created. The biggest problem with metadata regardless of system, is that it must be created by someone. On an indie feature for instance there is usually not a post budget sufficient fora pro Asst. Editor or 1st so there would never be money for someone to sit and create proper tags for all the shots. If I was cutting a union show it would be nice to assign an assistant to create proper metadata for every shot based on the needs of the show. I haven’t tried XMP yet as I haven’t had a show to cut in PPro – but it is on the list to try for the next feature film…

For many of us, without a proper budget, trained staff and schedule that allows for organization, metadata will remain one of those things we wish we could use every time we see a cool demo of how great it is…

Would Apple even consider XMP? Seems like they always go their own direction, especially when we’re talking open source and open standards… Couldn’t someone write a way to take data entered in Bridge and conform it to FCPX such as roles, favorites etc?

XMP looks like a great thing, what other major post or fx software company is using it?
