I would look into EditShare. They have a HD version showing at NAB(saw it yesterday at HDExpo) and it looks like the best solution out there. You can use Mac and PC and any combo of NLE’s (Avid, FCP, Vegas etc.)

No NLE? Using the Cineform plug-in the 24p JVC stuff works and looks fantastic in both Vegas 6 and PPro 2.

Mann liked the digital night stuff better because the latitude and quality – they actually rendered the final output at 1k to dirty up the image – so the grain in the release was put there intentionally.

Is this an Adobe issue or a AJA issue? AJA makes the codecs for their hardware – not Adobe – just like Blackmagic. I normally render a Quicktime if I need to take the show into another app.

See if the editor can get you an .AAF instead of an EDL. Seems to work better into Avid for me, though I haven’t done it with a DVX seq.

The single monitor defeault screen for Vegas confues most folks – it’s very non-standard. But, if you are working with dual monitors, you have limitless ways to set up the interface – it’s completely customizable based on what you do most – cut picture, mix audio, compositing? Very cool and very fast once you set it up the way yo want. You’ll find applying effects, color correcting and sound designing and mixing are extremely fast once you get the hang of it.

On the other hand, Premiere Pro uses the industry standard Source/record interface that is easy to use and has true bins like FCP and Avid, which Vegas does not. The good news is you don’t have to choose – with AAF import/export you can cut your picture in Premiere Pro then export the project via AAF and do all your multi-track sound design and mixing including 5.1 surround mix in Vegas – then output the finished job to tape, DVD, web, whatever right from the Vegas timeline – very cool workflow that I just did on an HDCAM indie feature.

They do render very slow and even slower if you check the force 16 bit rendering option – but worth the wait.

Sapphire works great in 2.0 and you can watch them in near realtime (depending on your system) after applying the effect. They are available in 4 modules – the only reason I didn’t mentio them is they cost far more than 55mm and you need the entire collection to surpass 55mm in features. The Sapphire FilmEffect is also outstanding (part of Box 2 – Stylize).

January 23, 2006 at 8:04 am in reply to: Xena vs Decklink?

The best solution for Xena users is the Cineform codec. You can take any HD format, including all flavors of HDV and convert them to 8 or 10 bit 4:2:2 full raster HD files that can be cut in real-time. Aspect does up to 1440×1080 8 bit and Prospect does full 1920×1080 at 8 or 10 bit. No need for offline/online. These are manageable size, theatrical quality .avi’s that surpass anything available in FCP or Avid.
