Right now I’m taking hours of footage through Compressor to get it out of Pro Res because all it does is say “Codec not found” stuff when i try and do anything in FCP 7.

June 17, 2010 at 2:31 pm in reply to: Codec not found. You may be using a compression type…Hey Shane – thanks for that info. With tapeless workflows all I need is an ability to monitor HD. Albeit it would be nice to ingest over HDMI, but not a requirement.
I’m not sure why my FCP7 system is buggy. I’ve been in IT for eight years professionally and am not dumb when it comes to computers. I’m using all Apple hardware except the Matrox card – didn’t even jump for cheaper 3rd party RAM on this thing. Loaded software is pretty normal – it isn’t like I have Avid and FCP loaded on the same system or anything.
Yet I’ve had to reload twice because Compressor quits working (or Q-master) and Final Cut just crashes for lame stuff. Not all the time, but twice yesterday over a small RGB based image. I’m just used to stable Avid. And now this screeching audio thing is just not acceptable – I’ll lose my hearing if that keeps up.
I honestly like some things in Final Cut over Avid….but the overall performance/reliability I don’t think is quite there yet. Especially for hardware and OS and flagship App all coming from the same vendor.

FCP7 has not been near as stable as Avid was for me. I’ve given it a fair try on a few projects. And now Avid supports Matrox cards so I’m probably just gonna go back. The hardware costs were the main bad point for Avid. I need stability….not crashes and reloads.

June 15, 2010 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Every so often sound screeches – killing my earsMy sound came from normal in camera sound (backup sound source) and from some type of digital mixing board/field recorder win the format of wav files.
Yes….it is SO loud it makes me not want to edit.
This happened before the BlackMagic card was installed. And I don’t have any other 3rd party stuff hooked up to or installed in the MAC PRO except a firewire card.

Thanks….so when i take that into compressor i can just choose a preset and then in the frame size set it to an HD preset? Or will that morph it to something bad? As in stretch the picture?

Yeah, I’m totally with you on the timeline with Avid Bret. I’d always put a piece of footage out to have working space.
I tried finding the overwrite option in my custom keyboard setup…this helps. The up and down cool too. THANK YOU.

March 25, 2010 at 6:09 pm in reply to: MacPro / imac / MacBook Pro – which to get for home studio?I just went through all of this for my system…..some things to consider:
1) If you are editing high rez HD, the iMac will only give you one hard drive to run your app on and store footage. Not always ideal. If you are just doing HDV and stuff, well no worries.
2) The iMac does not have eSata out. So you cannot hook anything faster than FW800 up to it. Again….depending on your footage this could be fine.
3) Don’t purchase an Apple Cinema Display unless you have a really good reason. I’ve got a 24″ 1080P HD display from Dell that cost me $160.
=)
