“Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.”

Getting the above in FCP7 / Snow Leopard when trying to render an Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) Quicktime.

I have two Apple ProRes 422 Quicktimes – one is a slightly different size than the other and only five minutes long. So….I just conformed the sequence to the longer of the two and planned on rendering the other (they came from the same source, same day).

I’ve been doing this workflow for a couple months with no problem. Just reloaded the OS and FCP due to a Compressor problem. Now this…ARGH.

Using Mac Pro (2009 system) with 4GB RAM. Software updates have run. THANKS!

Are you incorporating any still images into this project? PICTS, JPEGS? If so, make sure they are in the RBG format, and not CMYK.

You just reloaded the system or fcp?

Reloaded the entire system for the second time because after about a month of using Compressor it goes crazy and starts tanking on jobs for no reason.

FCP7 has not been near as stable as Avid was for me. I’ve given it a fair try on a few projects. And now Avid supports Matrox cards so I’m probably just gonna go back. The hardware costs were the main bad point for Avid. I need stability….not crashes and reloads.

[kyler boudreau] “. And now Avid supports Matrox cards so I’m probably just gonna go back.”

For monitoring only. No capture, no output to tape. Only output to HDTV or production monitor (component and HDMI only). Just FYI.

FCP is always stable for me. And many people….otherwise we wouldn’t use it. Typically what solves that is a complete reinstall of OS then FCP. BUT, I can understand wanting to go back to Avid. It’s a nice system. Just know that the MXO2 mini is for monitoring only.

Hey Shane – thanks for that info. With tapeless workflows all I need is an ability to monitor HD. Albeit it would be nice to ingest over HDMI, but not a requirement.

I’m not sure why my FCP7 system is buggy. I’ve been in IT for eight years professionally and am not dumb when it comes to computers. I’m using all Apple hardware except the Matrox card – didn’t even jump for cheaper 3rd party RAM on this thing. Loaded software is pretty normal – it isn’t like I have Avid and FCP loaded on the same system or anything.

Yet I’ve had to reload twice because Compressor quits working (or Q-master) and Final Cut just crashes for lame stuff. Not all the time, but twice yesterday over a small RGB based image. I’m just used to stable Avid. And now this screeching audio thing is just not acceptable – I’ll lose my hearing if that keeps up.

I honestly like some things in Final Cut over Avid….but the overall performance/reliability I don’t think is quite there yet. Especially for hardware and OS and flagship App all coming from the same vendor.

This happens with ProRes if you are using a non-standard frame size. Stick with standard frame sizes and not oddball ones and you’ll not see this warning.

For me, FCP is rock hard stable. Haven’t seen a crash this year yet.

I see….okay. I’m capturing footage from a web presentation that I record with iShowU HD. Is there another codec i should use that has good quality? This error is killing me.

    ProRes comes to mind.

That’s what I’m using. That’s what’s causing this entire problem from the sound of it.

Right now I’m taking hours of footage through Compressor to get it out of Pro Res because all it does is say “Codec not found” stuff when i try and do anything in FCP 7.

As Kevin says, it’s not about the ProRes codec, it’s about the frame size, so if you have 1280×720 or 1920×1080 or PAL or NTSC frame size at standard frame rates, you won’t get this issue.
