Yeah, I understand (didn’t know this before).

The problem is I’ve already captured a bunch of screen tutorials in odd frame sizes. So since ProRes will not be happy with them, what is my option? Right now I’m sending everything through Compressor and changing the codec to H.264 to see if that will work. But really have no idea….

I wouldn’t do that. h264 doesn’t play very nice in FCP.

What is the frame size of your screen captures as of now?

Really weird sizes – 1658 x 851 for example. Another one is 1438×823.

Instead of going to h264, I’d pick a frame size (such as 1280×720 @ 29.97 fps) and force all of your footage in to this size @ ProRes. The footage will be letterboxed, but you can always crop that out later on your final encode.

Okay cool – thanks. I’ll try that route.

Okay, I’m getting nowhere real fast. Cannot figure out how to force Compressor to pad correctly. It is stretching/cropping/destroying. Any tips? Thanks!

To make sure that you are displaying the intended output of Compressor, make sure to click to right box of the two little boxes that are almost at the top right corner of the compressor interface. It’s just above the preview window. You will see two boxes, click the one on the right. You will probably have to add custom padding due to your weird aspect ratios as well.

Thanks man. I did add the custom padding, but it just isn’t working. It will take less time to replay them on my system and recapture from scratch.

This is crazy. Is there any FCP codec that will let me bring in weird sizes without doing this? I might as well be using iMovie for this stuff. It is a sad day.

Use “preserve source aspect ratio” for the padding setting. I just made a test 1658×851 movie and brought in to compressor and got the appropriate result. My geometry window looks like this:

Exactly how it should. You’re getting something different?

Thanks man. That’s actually what I tried as it seemed logical, but it cropped mine a bit. Doesn’t seem to do the math exactly.

Oh well….I’ve resorted to applying the FX I need in the FCP timeline and then straight from the timeline to Compressor (FCP will not export a QT without the errors). Compressor finishes, bring the clip back into the time with the FX rendered it in. Voila.

    Freaking insane, but it’s working.
