November 21, 2011 at 3:01 am in reply to: Need a link to RED workflow – Final Cut Pro 7Thanks man. Question: in the export settings in RED CINE, I want to create Pro Res files for FCP, and I’m creating full quality ones because they may not go back to the raw files for any reason on this footage.
They said they shot to allow push in on some of the shots which means i can’t resize the footage to 1920×1080. What is the normal frame size for Epic? Or rather, do you have a recommendation for a frame size? If the DP shot the frame because the director wanted to push in to fake some close ups, I guess I need to do the full freaking thing?
The options go all of the way up to 5120 x 2700. YIKES.

November 19, 2011 at 3:08 am in reply to: Where’s my bottleneck? Editing a RED featureMichael – hey man. I’m not sure what you ended doing, but I’m an editor here in LA and I need to sell my Mac Pro. It was purchased from Apple December 2010. It is the 3.33GHz 6-core model with 16GB RAM and 5TB of disk. I’m trying toget $3800 which is way less than configuring this new. It is current product right now.
kyler / 310.425.2231 (to the Cows…hope saying this is okay. i’m not trying to push anything, just need to see this due to a money crunch)

Oh nice! I’ll try this….next time. Just reloaded the entire OS and feeding it FCP disks now.
Whatever.
But that’s cool – QMaster and Compressor seem a bit flaky, and if it is that simple, that would be SWEET.

Thanks for the feedback – I did in fact export the QT file before bringing into Compressor.
Honestly…I’m loving the new Mac, but on two new Snow Leopard Macs in the last year I’ve seen this happen. They come perfect from the Apple Store, you install FCP and things work for a bit, and then Compressor and QMaster have this odd falling out, and at this point the only way I can get it to work again is to reinstall everything.
If I dump the QT file into compressor and then look at system info, it isn’t spreading it out. All of the QMaster tasks sit at 0.0 – completely idle.
Rafael – I did clear out the QMaster files.
Type of sequence? Apple ProRez.
Does it happen on more than one sequence/quicktime file? Yes.

Cool thanks! I’m not demanding it be just like Avid, and am actually considering cutting the next feature in FCP which would have never been the case a year ago!
I’ll try those tools. I’m a keyboard freak, so as long as they can be mapped and accessed quickly like it seems you are saying, that should work.
THANKS.

Thanks – this didn’t change it, so I think I’m not describing very well.
I’m an anal editor and often wanting to trim things by a frame or two. In Avid, the trim tool allowed this easily. In FCP when I try and drag to trim, it wants to jump by like five frames first, an then it seems to drag frame by frame.
Very annoying, and I’m sure there is a better way. Granted – if I’m zoomed all of the way in on the timeline, it doesn’t do this, but I hate zooming in all of the way just to trim.

Mike! Okay man – now we’re talking. I had no idea I could re-conform via XML.
Sweetness.
This might actually help me do our feature in FCP. Can’t wait to try this out – thanks for the info.

That’s good to know – yeah, FCP’s native color is lame. I’ve enjoyed using Color and it is easy to get great results. Just wish it could do it within the app.
BTW – was up all night working on a 90 XDCAM sequence that I put Neat Video on. When I rendered in the native codec the grain removal was blotchy. When I moved the sequence to Pro Rez it looked perfect, but then I had a lot of problems exporting the quicktime out – kept getting “General Error” messages.
Weird, but just thought you’d like to know that there is a noticeable difference with that plugin when not rendering in Pro Rez.

If Color is higher then this all makes more sense. But Avid has the color wheels and the curves.
I need to look into this more I guess. Maybe Color is a ton better. Thanks Shane!
