Hey forum….this is a basics question I thing. I came from Avid Media Composer land and loved the trim tool that Avid has. However I’ve become very used to Final Cut’s trimming by just dragging the end of a video chunk to where I want it, and honestly….it is pretty easy! But, it is more difficult to finely tune trims down to frame decisions with this method. It seems when I try and drag an edit point in the time line, getting it to move frame by frame is tough. It wants to “snap” a few frames at a time.

Is there any control in FCP to tune this? Or do I need to use FCP’s trim mode. What’s the common method out there?

You can toggle snapping on and off with the N key.

    All the best,

Thanks – this didn’t change it, so I think I’m not describing very well.

I’m an anal editor and often wanting to trim things by a frame or two. In Avid, the trim tool allowed this easily. In FCP when I try and drag to trim, it wants to jump by like five frames first, an then it seems to drag frame by frame.

Very annoying, and I’m sure there is a better way. Granted – if I’m zoomed all of the way in on the timeline, it doesn’t do this, but I hate zooming in all of the way just to trim.

If you have an edit select in roll or ripple mode you can use the [ and ] keys or comma and period to move in one frame increments or Shift and those keys to move in five frame increments. You might also find it easier in the trim edit window. None of these tools are the same as Avid. It’s a different application with a different feel and different behaviors.

    All the best,

Cool thanks! I’m not demanding it be just like Avid, and am actually considering cutting the next feature in FCP which would have never been the case a year ago!

I’ll try those tools. I’m a keyboard freak, so as long as they can be mapped and accessed quickly like it seems you are saying, that should work.

    THANKS.
