  • Can Final Cut Retain Video Size On Import?

Posted by Kyler Boudreau on April 7, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I have some HD quality (ProRes 422) screen captures from iShowU HD that are 1442×975 in size. Weird I know – is there any way to import those into Final Cut and keep them that size so fonts don’t get fuzzy on resize? Final Cut resizes them on me….

    Specs: Snow Leopard, FCP 7.0.2

    THANKS!

Go in the User Preferences and uncheck the size to project checkbox. Now, every time you import an image it will retain its original size.

Your sequence settings need to match your source file….

Your source file is a non-standard size, so there is no preset for it. You will need to make a custom one.

Keep in mind, if you use a non standard frame size, you will not be able to output to an external video monitor or to tape.

Might be best to convert it to a standard HD frame size using Compressor. With the Frame Controls set to Best, the scaling is quite good.

If this is for computer playback only, it might not be necessary.

Youi don’t need a preset, just drag n drop it into a new sequence, click OK in the dialog box.

Your fonts look “fuzzy” because you are not monitoring your video properly. Try setting the Canvas to 100% precisely.

Thanks….so when i take that into compressor i can just choose a preset and then in the frame size set it to an HD preset? Or will that morph it to something bad? As in stretch the picture?

Do what Kevin said above. If you are unhappy with the results after viewing on a proper video monitor, try Compressor.

You will need to make adjustments in the Geometry Pane to letterbox or crop the image, rather than stretch it to fill the frame. Just play with it and read the Compressor manual if you get confused.
