Thanks! I’m trying it out now and initial results are great, but it is softening my footage and purifier didn’t do that. any ideas? i’m messing with neat video’s advanced settings trying to see if I can make it better. I’d much rather use an FCP plugin prior to color as opposed to the clunky interface of purifier.

    Rafael:

I just tried Video Purifier and it seems to work, but what do you mean about clipping? Is there another product you suggest?

That was a great resource – thanks for the link. I purchased the 3.33GHz single six-core processor system as that seemed to be the most bang for the buck. Like it so far!

Along with that, make sure your QMaster is setup to share your cores (System Preferences/Apple QMaster). When you submit the job in Compressor, then choose the QMaster deal. (if your system is dual/quad core)

Thanks Shane. In film school I learned and cut on Avid in tape based work flows. FCP and file based together spawn a lot of questions. I’m like a new moron all over again. =)

Most of the footage is 29.97 so I’ll just do a ProRes sequence based on that and worry about the 23.976 stuff later.

Really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Helps a ton.

November 23, 2010 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Sony EX3 24p Project Question

    1) Question – I thought AV capture settings in FCP would affect how the footage was logged and transferred, but am I wrong in thinking that? Do they just apply to tape ingest?

    2) Before your responses I had set it to DVCPRO HD, but when I logged/transferred everything it seems to be correct showing XDCAM EX 1080 as the compressor. So that’s right correct? Or should I redo everything?

    3) Also, the DP seems to have shot things in 29.97 and 23.976. I don’t think that will be a time line problem, but should I set the time line to one over the other? Final output of this is online web and DVD.

    4) Do I really have to do that Compressor redo to ProRes? This is a ten minute long promo type project. But I still don’t want quality degradation. Can I just render in ProRes and be okay?

    Thanks guys.

you ARE the man. we already see an improvement in the footage. there was a flicker that was apparent capturing HDV. ProRess 422 – it’s gone.

    Cool man! Thanks.

I’m using now the Apple HDV-ProRess 422 preset. Good?

    (FCP7)

Holy Smokes. Is this still a problem with the latest FCP7?

We are digitizing around 90 one hour HDV tapes shot on the Canon HV40. I do not want to redo them, but why am I not reading this from other people? My gutt is to of course trust you, but it’s just a 90-tape decision.

    Cool thanks!

Question: one person said to capture in HDV and then render out the final sequence in ProRes to achieve the same results without the larger file sizes. Is this true? Or do I need to capture in ProRes? I just don’t want any quality loss at all.

    Deliverable is SD DVD.
