  • FCP to Compressor Settings 14 hrs to Encode???

Posted by Amber Miller on December 14, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I have an hour long video to needs to be made into DVD.
I’ve directly exported from FCP to Compressor using DVD Best Quality 90 minutes.

IT SAYS IT WILL TAKE 14 hrs!!!!

    It is Prores footage.
Here are the settings I’m using in Compressor:

    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
    Estimated file size: 3.63 GB
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
    Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
    Format: M2V
    Width: 1440
    Height: 1080
Pixel aspect ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)
    Crop: None
    Padding: None
    Frame rate: 29.97
    Frame Controls On:
    Retiming: (Fast) Nearest Frame
    Resize Filter: Statistical Prediction
    Deinterlace Filter: Fast (Line Averaging)
    Adaptive Details: On
    Antialias: 0
    Detail Level: 0
    Field Output: Same as Source
    Start timecode from source
    Aspect ratio: 16:9
    Field dominance: Bottom first
    Average data rate: 6.8 (Mbps)
    2 Pass VBR enabled
    Maximum data rate: 8 (Mbps)
    High quality
    Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 15, Structure: IBBP
    DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled

I have Mac Pro 2x3ghz Quad Core with 6 gigs Ram.
I need the best quality obviously but 14 hours seems outrageous and keeps me from editing in the meantime. There has to be something I’m doing wrong…..

    Thanks in Advance!

Export a self contained QT first using Export QT Movie, then bring into Compressor.

Along with that, make sure your QMaster is setup to share your cores (System Preferences/Apple QMaster). When you submit the job in Compressor, then choose the QMaster deal. (if your system is dual/quad core)

There is ZERO reason to use VBR encoding, slows down the process and when you have such a short program CBR will be a ton faster and in most cases it will be better. Set the CBR bitrate to 7Mbps and let her rip, if should be close to real time, even if you are sending it from the FCP timeline, but Exporting it will speed up the encoding process but CBR will be even a bigger improvement.

Aside from the VBR… would all my other settings be correct? Anything else you would suggest?

    I also question your settings,
    Width: 1440
    Height: 1080
Pixel aspect ratio: HDV 1080i (16:9)

Those aren’t standard DVD settings, try
    Width and Height: Automatic
    Selected: 720 x 480
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV (16:9)

Interesting…what about a 30 minute effects loaded project? I am using VBR one pass best.

Thanks Kyler..I just opened Qmaster for the first time. and the settings terminology
says nothing about “setup to share your cores “..This newby needs a little more help.
    Thanks

Under Services, put a check mark next to share for the items you want to be able to access (Rendering, Compressor). Then click the button “Options for selected service” and enable as many cores as you want. Due to the way the hyper threading is seen by the OS, you’ll see more cores than you really have. Typically double than you have.

I have not experimented with what percentage performs the best. I think I typically select all instances for sharing.

Also, saw above that you are doing VBR on pass? I’d do CBR man. My testing has shown CBR to smoke VBR one and two pass.

And if you are going from HD to SD, enable the frame control in Compressor. I think that is the 3rd or 4th tab. It is off by default. My testing has shown option one at best, two at default and three at better to be ideal. Someone else suggested that and in comparing them, I can’t get even all best to look better.

[george sloan] “Interesting…what about a 30 minute effects loaded project? I am using VBR one pass best.”
For anything shorter than 1 hour CBR should be OK.
However I prefer keep using VBR for everything, because CBR disable some very important options: Short GOPs and Open GOPs.
Open GOPs is a feature than, IMO, shouldn’t be skipped.
All Pro MPEG-2 encoders (BitVice, CinemaCraft, and I guess Episode), by default uses “Open GOPs”.

[kyler boudreau] “Also, saw above that you are doing VBR on pass? I’d do CBR man. My testing has shown CBR to smoke VBR one and two pass.”
One pass VBR makes no sense.
